2002-06-10 17:07:46 EST: 1223 / 184
Your download speed : 1223387 bps, or 1223 kbps.
A 149.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 184331 bps, or 184 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I should mention i am in the Ottawa region...

My download has been capped at 1500 for a while, but i just noticed they just capped my upload too... Damn...

Trust me i am capped... For months, the highest i will get any time of the day, even at 3 am is no higher than 1250 kbps... I used to get a 400 kbps upload speed... Then today its 185, 190 kbps, never more...

If i download off microsoft, or any website i never exceed 160 kb/s ~ 1280 kbps...

Here's another test...
2002-06-10 19:04:32 EST: 1116 / 184
Your download speed : 1116608 bps, or 1116 kbps.
A 136.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 184331 bps, or 184 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Damn this sucks... Its almost as bad as Sympatico... If they implement download/upload cap limits rogers will be pure crap...

empeethree ... read for once will ya!

They're talking about the upload speed being capped at 192 (used to be 384), and any upload speed test will almost certainly be able to distinguish the two, unless you've got bandwidth hogs on your node.

Paddler ... you are really getting clobbered for speeds in the evening at peak times. The fact that the upload speed drops at the same time as your download suggests that there are people on your node who are doing a lot of file sharing / uploading. Any attempt to upload lots of data really will slow down a cable system.

While I don't mind speed caps as much as ul/dl caps, it definatly sucks at times. Having only had this since january...if they do introduce ul/dl caps I'll simply move off to another ISP...I'll chock rogers.com upto ISP #8.

Tell me about it ... to go with the 192 K Upload cap, it looks like they capped our download out here to 792K ... it's as hard as a rock at that speed, no matter who I download from. I complained this morning and am supposed to have a tech come out.

While you have the tech there, ask where the Richmond Road Phub is located. It may be closer to where you are located than the flfrd Phub.

Richmond Road phub is in the old Ottawa Cablevision offices on Richmond Rd., near the old RMOC headquarters building between Island Pk and Woodroffe.

It probably would be a bit closer than Fallowfield (which is where they have their dishes for this end of town), but it makes sense because the cables for Kanata go out of Fallowfield along Fallowfield Rd to Eagleson, and then straight up Eagleson / March all the way out to Dunrobin.
(Constance Bay has its own Cable company)

It's all pole cabling until Fernbank Rd. and goes underground up to nearly Klondike road when it goes back on poles for now! The 2 way stops at Thomas Dolan Pkwy on Dunrobin Rd, and single cable on out to West Carleton School because there's only a few homes left on the system after TDP, I guess.

Cabling from Richmond Road would be a nightmare ... with all that buried part betweeen Rchrd and Crystal Beach.

slnt (St. Laurent) is in the old Skyline Cablevision hq out near the Mus. of Sci. & Tech.

All modems are due to be capped at 1500 / 192 in preparation for the advanced tier service. This from the tech I spoke with this morning. She was quite open about that.

Seems that bit caps are still very much in discussion though - she was hinting that they might not happen given the words she chose! Clever isn't it ... make the noises so that Sympatico and others bite (saying they're following Rogers lead), watching the fallout, and then making up your own mind. Let others take the flack first. Still, I don't believe they won't happen, but it looks like the idea is to see what the low upload speeds will do (after all, 192K is going to make uploads quite pathetic) to the bandwidth hogs, since so much is done on peer to peer.

Now to add to the bit cap debate; how does 30gb down per month with 1 - 2 gb up sound? That appears to be the latest rumor making the rounds.

I would be very surprised to see that high a cap ... based on the speed capping, if implemented, I would expect 8/1 for regular service and maybe 12/2 for ultra service.

The only way I could forsee them implementing a cap like that (and that would be for ultra service) would be to make it an absolute cap ... download more than that, and you're turned off.

Well the download sounds alright, guess I could deal with that... but if they made the upload cap that low they should uncap the upload completely, or at least make its the same as download considering its so low.

The upload on a cable system is the real performance killer ... so there is a real need to have the upload at least 4-5 time lower than the download ... although with the new lower speeds, progably 3-4 times would be OK ... so if the download was say 6, the upload would need to be about 1.5 to 2

Stuart

So much for the tech doing anything useful. He can't get at the net techs who set the caps. He just plays with the RF. The line specs aren't quite right, but not enough to cause this kind of problem.

If we get bit caps similar to sympatico's, there will be absolutely no reason to keep rogers... The only reason i got it over sympatico in the first place was for the 300 kb/s download and 45 kb/s upload, now we are going to see at most 160 kb/s download and like 20 kb/s uploads... This is only during non-peak hours...

Just woke up this morning (Sat AM) and noticed I'm newly capped on my upload at 192k. Tried a few different speed tests - all confirm what look like a 192k cap. I'm in Ottawa. For now, I'll go along with it since I'm on the "half-price" plan for a few more months.

If this turns into a new permanent upload cap and bit caps go into effect, I'll likely switch over to the Lite Edition (or spend more time at work).

Future of broadband?? Not quite...u mean "future of broadband in Canada"!!

1) No US ISP has ever mentioned or contemplated a bit cap that I know of. Correct me if I am wrong. Ever wonder why?

2) Both Speed/Bit caps r profit oriented activities. I mean MORE profit for the monopolies....my poor fellow Canadians. Anybody who is using over the pathetic, low AUP limit is "labelled" as an "abuser/BW hog" and not a "valued customer"...not a fair term to use in my opinion. In fact only monopolies have the nerve to use such terms on their "value customers".Hey 5/1 ot even 8/1 is only good for an occasional file transfer, email and browsing web pages and may some mp3s and an occasional game or two. Let's forget about all the other good things that r already here and r yet coming. A lot of these technologies demand bandwidth. I had read about one of the reasons why technological advances we so often take for granted in the Western world and yet r lacking in China is because of the cost of access to these technologies by the masses there. Looks like Canada will lag further behind the US in the name of MORE profit for a selected few.

3) Using p2p/file-sharing as an excuse, the Canadian ISPs r trying to extort a lot more $$ from u and I. Let's say if the extra charge per GB is around $8 to $20, then the ppl who only turn their computers on once or twice a week and accumulate a monthly usage of 1/0.5 should really get their connection almost free, assuming the basic package runs around $40 to $50/month. U and I must know a lot of ppl like that. Don't we?? By imposing these caps, the Canadian ISPs r basically drinking from both ends of the straw!! Even if u were brainwashed to such an extent as to believe in the concept of a flat fee system is dead, how could one tolerate such outrageous surcharge??

Although I am not in Ontario,(and thank God, Rogers had left B.C.) we r all being affected just the same sooner or later. Forums like this give concerned consumers a chance to share info and to voice their opinions. Hopefully with enough concerns expressed, the "blow" could be softened somehow. But then again, don't hold ur breath.

I foresee a correction in the Canadian broadband industry if all these caps r applied universally and may be a return of more dialups and the so-call "lite" connections. After all, if 90% of the current subscribers would only use 1/0.5, may be the latter connections r suffice. These ppl will come to their senses soon. The other 10% who r in he position to take advantage of the latest technologies wouldn't be able to afford them at all.
