Re: Now Who's Next

Since when does Speakeasy charge $59.95 again? When I tried to switch on their web site, it still came up as $89.95. They seem impossible to get ahold of over the phone, but we'll see. If the price is indeed $59.95, that is definately something to look at.

I'm not sure when they made the switch. But I checked twice today at http://www.speakeasy.net/ellis and it comes up with $59.95. The package is called HotWire Plus (residential 144/144 IDSL, 2 static IPs, 2 e-mail accounts). However, there is still a $99 transfer fee. No info on whether or not its a 12 month contract.

Covad.net actually works out to be a little cheaper if you count the free month and no transfer fee into the mix.

I see it, thanks. I was picking the wrong plan. I really want to do it, but since I am only going to be here for about 8 months, it's ridiculous to do a year contract. I signed up for Covad.net, but E-mailed them to cancel it. I do not want to pay for the service and not use it! There must be some way to get out of these contracts, but all places say no.

Yeah, pay the termination fee or keep paying for the service. The only other way out would be to find an ISP will do it month by month. But that will be hard to do, as it stands now they don't even see any $$$ from you for about a year. Thus there is no incentive for them not to require a contract.

But wouldn't they rather have my money for 8 months then not have any of my money at all? That just dosen't make any sense. It took like like 4 months to hook me up, they will never make all that money back. I guess this is why all these companies are going out of business..

I'm trying to find the $59.95 rate for IDSL on Speakeasy.net. I do not see a package called HotWire Plus listed anywhere. All of the 144/144 IDSL packages are listed at $89.95. Does the cheaper rate really exist? Can someone provide the link.

Also, if you switch ISP's via Covad.net, which ISP do you go with (e.g., DSL.net, Concentric, Speakeasy, etc).

Say it costs them $200 to get you connected (really low, especially if they had a truck roll).
Your $54.95 (That's what covad.net is charging me) * 8 =$439.60.
Subtract the $200 cost for your install and they are left with $239.60 as profit. Now pay for that T1, 24x7 customer support, etc... You'll see that they are making very little per month.
In short, it's better for them to not take your money. The resources would be better spent for someone who will be there for the whole year, so they can recoup the costs and even make a profit.
Problem with DSL is that the costs are relatively high to get it installed and the companys won't see a profit for a while. It's sort of like the early days of cellular. They were giving phones away that cost $400, hoping to make it back on the 1 year contract they sold you (with limited minutes).

I spoke with a Speakeasy rep yesterday asking about how to get the Hotwire Plus (I also could not find it on the website). He said that only a portion of the IDSL customers would qualify (I believe those using the Telesurfer accounts at present, but I don't remember exactly). If you sign up for the IDSL service and qualify for the Hotwire plus, then you will get it for 59.99, if not then it's 89.99. I went ahead and signed up without being sure of which version of IDSL I had... I could care less at this point. Not going back to dial-up and I will NOT use Bellsouth (my ILEC) for any amount of money.
