Anon | SMTP servers on GTE? Does anyone know how to set up the SMTP server on GTE DSL to send email using an email address that does not end in gte.net? I am using outlook express and would like to send mail using another account. that account won't let me relay through them unless I am at their location (a college) so I have to use GTE's SMTP server. I can't figure out how to get it to work without sending out messages that only come back to the gte.net address, no matter "who" I send them as. anyone figure this out already?
please send any help to markb@u.washington.edu if you could.
thanks! |

 | This is set by GTE so that spammers can't relay through their SMTP servers. Try using one of the freebie services like excitemail. |

Anon | reply to Anon Re: SMTP relays
I've had very good luck with a free smtp provider named Softhome. Their servers are quick, rarely down, and allow up to 5mbyte attachments to be sent via their free smtp, however, unlimited attachments to be received via their pop3.
The signup is a breaze. They ask almost no questions, which is a privacy plus. http://www.softhome.net
Two notes:
a. You must POP before you send mail (ie check, then send) if you haven't POP'd within the past 10 minutes. b. You cannot pop too often to prevent undue server load (once every 30 seconds would cause you to have to wait for 10 minutes to check your mail.)
These "rules" are common for most free smtp providers, and softhome is very good.
Another few to try: http://www.privacyx.com http://www.gmx.net [or] http://www.gmx.co.uk

Anon | reply to Anon I will go ahead and tell you now that you can ONLY use a gte.net email with smtp.gte.net its what they call the nas filters there is no way to have them removed unless they host the domain for the email address you are tring to use |

 | If all you are looking for is to have the responses sent back to your college address, change the Reply Address to your college address. Kind of a cheap work-around, but it should work.

 | reply to Anon you can't. We do not allow that from our smtp server so we can prevent spamming from our network. -- Any views or opinions expressed are the sole opinion of the author, not necessarily the views or opinions of Verizon Select Services or any of it's affiliates. |
