| Got hit by the 1.5/192 cap during the day... Freakin bastards capped me... around noon i still had a 2.3mbit down and 385kbps up... Now i come home from work, boom, the cap is in place...
2002-06-19 22:44:29 EST: 1123 / 184 Your download speed : 1123425 bps, or 1123 kbps. A 137.1 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 184885 bps, or 184 kbps.
Stil, thats quite way off 1.5mbit... Bastards. its not that my line can't handle it, or my setup is wrong... I think the cap is lower than 1.5mbit.. more like 1.2mbit. -- Thanks Leafs for a great season & playoffs. |

| A 1.5 download cap will give you a 1.2 to 1.4 max speed.
At least you got your 1.2 down ... when they capped my up, the down was capped by hardware at 4*192 ... which got me around 700 which fell to under 300 at night!
My speeds on DOCSIS are good. |

| I'm not on docis, i'm using a 4 year old Terayon modem supplied originally by Shaw when I first signed up. Why cant the download speed be close to the cap limit? the upload speems to be almost right on at 192kbps.... I called Rogers to inquire, the tech didnt know diddly, he transfered me to customer care, they didnt know jack, i spoke to a 2nd level tech, he knew nothing... what the F!@# is going on with this company, I got no emails or letters saying they are going to do it.... In a year and a half rogers now TWICE reduced the service speed, and raised the price by $5... you'd think their freakin techs would know what the F!@# they're talking about.... god I hate this, totally jerking the customers around. -- Thanks Leafs for a great season & playoffs. |

| The reason the speed drops below the cap is that your connection is end to end. Remote node, through all the routers to you. There is no "speed buffering", so it takes a little longer going from you the host to you and your ack back to the host, so you're speed throttled all the way ... not just from Rogers, and some hosts speed throttle slow responders with lower priority, which is why my evening speeds tumbled way down.
Rogers PR is really bad. If they put this kind of info in an FAQ they mailed to people it would be better, but they don't, and they don't even give good info to their techs. |

| I see... well, I guess i'll live with it. Maybe its a sign of the higher speed service coming into play soon. And you're right about the PR, its totally crap. No Email, nothing regarding this rather drastic reduction in speed. For me, its almost exactly reduced in half. I used to get 384kbps upload, now its 192k. and i used to get 2.2-2.4mbit download, now the speed tests dont go over 1.1-1.2mbit... -- Thanks Leafs for a great season & playoffs. |

| Just did another speed test this morning at 11:30am...
2002-06-20 11:33:40 EST: 1270 / 182 Your download speed : 1270241 bps, or 1270 kbps. A 155 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 182773 bps, or 182 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
Looks thats as good as it gets... The download doesnt bother me so much as the upload speed cut, literally in half. -- Thanks Leafs for a great season & playoffs. |

| reply to elusion Hehe well, my Rogers connect died at about 2pm today.. A few tech support calls later and they can't tell me what's going on. My modem is online, but I cannot get an IP. I've asked them about the caps again, and they dont know anything. They did however tell me a few intersting stats.
1. The TeraLink gateway can handle 700 modems without speed decrease on a given node 2. There are currently 100 modems on my node 3. There are 7 total cablemodems on my street, which only has 14 houses, LOL.
I live in Scarborough BTW, Kingson & Guildwood area right across from the two nice condo's.
I was amazed that I was getting good speeds until the cap hit, given the amount of people on the node and my street. For now, I'm on backup Sympatico dialup i use from work. God it sux, 28.8kbps... -- Thanks Leafs for a great season & playoffs. |

1. The TeraLink gateway can handle 700 modems without speed decrease on a given node
That's the gateway ... not the nodes ... each node is about 300 users max. As to speed decrease ... that's not an accurate picture ... it may be that the gateway can handle that level, but that's not to say that each node can! said by HiVolt:
2. There are currently 100 modems on my node 3. There are 7 total cablemodems on my street, which only has 14 houses, LOL.
That sounds about right ... 50% of houses in a street ... 100 modems on the node is quite light. said by HiVolt:
I was amazed that I was getting good speeds until the cap hit, given the amount of people on the node and my street.
Well ... you'll get decent speeds until 10% of them go on with heavy uploads at the same kind of time. said by HiVolt:
For now, I'm on backup Sympatico dialup i use from work. God it sux, 28.8kbps...
Be thankful for that ... in the last place I lived, in spite of being on a fibre connected exchange, 90% of my connects were at 24K no matter what speed modem I had! Imagine having a 56K modem going at 24K! Oh the frustration! |

i have no idea if it's already been capped because i've been getting these results for almost a YEAR now! and this is on the NYC speakeasy test which is the speed test i get the best results on... for past 2 days... during the day, i would actually get lite download speeds!.. but upload always seems to be this crappy until approx 3am (then it's near the 1500/192 cap)
btw... i thought they won't tell you how many people on your street are on rogers or something because they don't want us to know how badly they're overcrowding the nodes? [text was edited by author 2002-06-22 15:54:56]
