What is a remote service unit ?

I was recently told I can only get IDSL on my loop because there is a "remote service unit" somewhere in the loop. Does anyone know what this means?

Sounds like some kind of testing equipment. And from what I've been told, that's something they should remove if you ask them to do so. Complain that it's interfering with your voice service

Actually, I found out that RSU's are the same as DLC's, and their purpose is to provide voice service. You may want to look up DLC in the glossary on the home page of this site.

Actually neither of you are correct. An RSU stands for remote service unit and it's kind of like a mini central office. Sometimes when a new subdivision is created and there are not enough people to warrant a new CO they link an RSU to the existing CO. In order for you to get DSL there must be a piece of equipment called a DSLAM in your RSU. Verizon (GTE) is equiping RSU's frequently. Ask a sales rep to look up their deployment list and see if something is in the works.
DLC is a totally different ball game and a pain in the butt. Good Luck!

Punk's right, I'm using GTE DSL in Lancaster, CA and I was told in November that I couldn't get DSL (not even IDSL) because of my RSU. Look at this page...»www.gte.com/Regulatory/nwc1.html and check the latest listing of the Central Office switch change report for your RSU number (mine was RSU8 for example). If you need to, call GTE DSL and ask em what RSU you are on. This listing should provide (to the extreme right side) some help in when the RSU is going to be DSL capable. When I checked in Feb, they listed my RSU as being connected in July. I had DSL up and running by July 6. Hope this helps,

Xanth

Okay here is a question:

If the RSU is upgraded to support DSL, does Verizon measure the distance from the CO to the location or from the RSU to the desired service location?

If the RSU is equipped with a DSLAM then its from your home to the RSU. Remember, the RSU is like a mini CO so if equipped with a DSLAM, then the RSU can provide you with DSL. Just an FYI.
Think I could cram a few more acronyms in there?
