Speed test thread!!!

Ok lets do this and do it right. There will be 2 tests to run and you will have to do it as follows. First no proxy or any other program to boost speed. Second post the time you did the test. The file must be downloaded right till the end and then you take a screen cap of that. For the NYC test copy and paste the result as I have done.

Here is the file
»look.games.tucows.com/de ··· 721.html
Here is NYC
»nyc.speakeasy.net/

So its 1:50am and here are my results
2002-07-05 01:48:15 EST: 1233 / 91
Your download speed : 1233951 bps, or 1233 kbps.
A 150.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 91085 bps, or 91 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Lets see how you do.

Ok here's my test. Its 3:20 AM here now. I will do another one in peak time tomorrow around 7-8PM. One thing to note the Tucows download test, the download was going at a consistant 177KB/sec, but when it finished downloading, IE copies the file from the temp dir to the destination folder, taking its time on my laptop, and therefore the final speed is 165KB/sec. DuMeter stopwatch was stopped the moment the file stopped transferring. I am still experiencing 1400/320 speeds for some reason... Not complaining hehe..

This is pretty interesting,

1. The tucwos download speed test was consistantly downloading at 344-346 steady even till the end, but when it showed the final screen, it showed as 337.

2. My NYC speed test doesnt correspond with my tucows speeed test. ITS TOTALY OFF lol

My tests are deadly consistant now, I dont know why. First I was hit by the 1500/192 cap, and the tests fluctuated quite a bit from 1000-1200kbps, upstream was steady at 180-183kbps. Now for a week or two for some reason my speeds are rock steady at 1400-1425/320-324, at any time of day or night.

Hehe, looks like everyone is following the instructions! The point of this is to run the exact same test with both the IE download window and DuMeter. As well as posting nyc.speakeasy.net results done right before or after the download.

Well, at least the DuMeter graph can visually illustrate any spikes during the transfer, to indicate problems.

neway i said it was dumb cuz hivolt and mau were sayin... y would we need to put in so much info... its just a connection... and its rogers... u should already know not to expect downloads with no spikes and stuff...
my download always spikes but overall its around 2500kbps... the funny thing is i downloaded from microsoft and fileplanet and the download didnt spike at all maybe like by 10kB/sec @ the most from both sites... after... i downloaded from like 5 other sites and they were all spikey

Its not dumb skillton, we just wanna get an idea of how good or bad some areas are. Also to see who's still yet unaffected by the dreadful cap, like yourself. And what's 100 megs, you prolly have a 60gb hard drive or something, hehe... you can delete the file after, I did.

It is terrible. And what would Rogers say when you call? They'd say "It's an acceptable speed". I heard that enough times, I've even had them tell me that 40KB/sec was fine.

It was just a burst for a second or so, nothing sustained.

actually, i have this app (NewsBinPro, i use the rogers NNTP server.... tons of interestin sh*t in it... movies, apps, etc) and though that ive hit speeds up and on 500+kb/sec.... althou i think its b/c of the fact that it is a newserver, and is run straight throu its own server on rogers...

BTW, notice the inaccurate average speed, on ether DU or IE 6!

I have newsbin pro as well, and its default method of displaying speed is in kilobits per second. unless you changed the option, you are seeing kilobits per second. 500kbps is about 62 kilobytes/sec, which is not all that fast if you think about it, especially from their own news server.

For kilobits use kb and for kiloBYTES use KB. It makes the world go around better
