Re: Sprint 645 modem with Linksys BEFSR41

You got it right, and there are comparable firewall settings to be accessed in the 642R router.

Sprint does not support the firewall protection being enabled, so you will need to find your documentation that came in the box, or refer to ZyXel's website for configuration info.

Just add a switch and surf away. Since your connection is capped at a certain speed, Sprint doesn't care how many computers you use to split that connection.

Bill,
I'm a rank amateur that has been wrestling with this for 6 days (and nights) I'm in the same situation that you were a month ago. Could you please spell out the steps? I've been trying to piece them together but not joy.
Thank

Hi,
Do you have a static or a dynamic IP Address? You would have had to have ordered a dynamic address from Sprint.

Go into the browser based admin settings for the Zyxel. You can usually reach it by typing 192.168.1.1 in internet explorer or whatever browser you use (where you normally type www.dslreports.com or whatever). Then you need to type the user name and password when it prompts you to log into the Zyxel. Tech support can tell you what they are if you do not know. Click the Advanced setup link in the left column. And then click the Nat Applications link. You will now be looking at your port forwarding for the Zyxel modem. Set your router's IP address that the Zyxel modem assigned it (usually 192.168.1.2) in the default all ports line (Line number 1). This will cause the zyxel modem to forward all ports(traffic) to your Linksys router. Also make sure underneath the internet security link it is set to level 1 (no filtering). Then you just have to forward the ports you need to whichever pc you want in the Linksys port forwarding area. If you want all ports to go to one pc, then set it as the dmz host in your linksys setup configuration. You should be able to access your Linksys through the browser also, either by typing in the lanside address or the wan side address (192.168.1.2 wanside or 192.168.0.1 lanside usually).

I thought dynamic was the default.

I had to request the static IP. Has that changed? Or is it different there?

Hi,
First connect your modem to your computer with the cable that came with it. Then go to Start > Run, then type Telnet192.168.1.1 then click ok. You will then be prompted for a password. Enter 1234 You will now be in the modems menu. now do the following:
1. Main Menu. Select Option 1, then choose ROUTE=NO and BRIDGE=YES
2. Main Menu. Select Option 11, then option 1. Choose ROUTE=NO and BRIDGE=YES.
Be sure to hit Enter and not Esc after you make your changes. Make sure your changes are saved. I think at the end, it said "Writing to ROM" Now close out. Shut your computer down.
Now connect you 645 modem to your routers WAN port and your computer to one of it's LAN ports. Start your computer and open your web browser and enter you routers set-up menu (with a Linksys, you would enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and use "admin" for a password). In the router's menu select PPPoE login and enter you user name (xxxxx@earthlink.net) and password that you set up with Sprint( I assume that you have all ready connected your modem to your computer as sprint has told you to and set up your Earthlink account). Save the changes in your router's menu and exit out and you should be good to go. If anything is unclear, let me know. It WILL work...I wrote this using it!!!
Good luck, Bill

I was ready to ship back the darn router. So can;t the manufacturers and tecg support from Srpint have figure this outr (yea I know, too many 3rd party options, blah blah blah).

THANK YOU!!!!! it now works, would not have if I did not find your post.

From the 645/Linksys FAQ:

quote:

...
2. Set the Device IP Address to “192.168.2.1”
...
Each PC should be able to access each device independently.
Lynksys Router by browser 192.168.2.1 and 645ME+ by telnet 192.168.1.1.

Shouldn't the router's address be 192.168.1.2? With 192.168.2.1 and a subnet of 255.255.255.0 wouldn't it be on the wrong subnet?

As a second issue, the 645 I have does not list the ROUTE option in the menu as shown in the FAQ. Model number is Prestige 645 ADSL Modem, it was originally configured for covad access. Is this thing even usable with fastconnect? or do I just need new firmware/config?
