belushiPremium,MVM join:2000-11-08 Twinsburg, OH | reply to vito Seems to be OK thus far since changing the firmware. One thing changed that I don't fully understand is the port forwarding. It just seems to be the wrong screen altogether when you try to add a rule for it. Does anyone else see this? |

vito join:2001-11-28 Gilbertsville, PA | reply to vito Yes i noticed this too. This is what you have to do.
Just f.y.i. go to add service add the info you want for the Service, and apply then go to ports and click add, you can then drop down the service name to the Service you added. from here add info for the port forward.
Sorry if this does not sound right. i need more coffee. |

 | reply to vito Please keep us posted on the new firmware... I have a client with a FVS318 (and they want more for the vpn from site to site) and I would really like to try the firmware, but can't afford a total mess like when I originally installed that thing.

JimThePCGuyFormerly known as schja01.Premium,MVM join:2000-04-27 Morton Grove, IL | reply to vito I installed the beta firmware to replace the ALPHA firmware that came with the FVS318. I can no longer have it downstream to my Sonicwall. Not sure why. I'll research that new feature later. There is a new diagnostic to view the routing table. The routing table has no default route. Hmmmm. If I attach it directly to my DSL modem I still get 'Suspicious TCP Data" from my DNS server IP addresses and various other web sites the Sonicwall thinks are perfectly OK. I tried downloading the Windows 2000 SP3 (large) and it crapped out about half way through (50MB +/-) and all the TCP connections show as dropping at that instant as well so that "feature" still exists. Come on Netgear let's get your act together please. James -- Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead ! |

I have no problem connecting the FVS downstream from my AMIT. It correctly got its IP address and DNS servers from my network, and is doing fine. I like the Diagnostics screen. said by schja01: If I attach it directly to my DSL modem I still get 'Suspicious TCP Data" from my DNS server IP addresses and various other web sites the Sonicwall thinks are perfectly OK. The two problems I had (not reaching certain sites with the default 1500 MTU and no tracerouting) seem to have been solved. Also, posting a sizeable message (this one) to this forum didn't work with the 1.00 release, and now it works correctly. I'll do some more testing tomorrow. said by schja01: Come on Netgear let's get your act together please.
This release is going in the right direction. In the "Add Services/Add Custom Service" it twice reads "Prot" instead of "Port", and the links to the correct help screens are incorrect or absent for the new and modified screens, but functionally it's far superior. Looks good to me, Netgear! -- "Technically, Windows is an 'operating system,' which means that it supplies your computer with the basic commands that it needs to suddenly, with no warning whatsoever, stop operating." -Dave Barry |

I sent a bug report to betabugs@netgear.com regarding my issue when downstream to the Sonicwall. They emailed me a newer beta (L1.01 Aug. 8 2002 ) and it did fix my issue.
I've elevated the status of my FVS318 from "paperweight" to "test box" and will see how things shape up.

I think this is very encouraging. I'll do a thorough test tomorrow (after I take the van through its annual roadworthyness test, damn those holiday chores ), and mail my observations to betabugs.
I'm running the office through the Netgear for a while - holidays have some advantages .
First conclusion: with the FVS318 directly connected through PPPoE, I cannot post this message to this forum with an MTU of 1500 or 1492 :-(. 900 works, 1162 works (but it seems not reliably and quite slow), and 1262 is no good at all. Looks like IP fragmentation handling still needs some work.
Take care,

 | reply to vito Hrm. now that there's a half-decent update to the FVS318, it might be time to purchase one. Of course, it seems that the beta firmware is better. Anyone know how to join the beta firmware list? (I don't even know how the original beta firmware got leaked out... or if these leaks would be a regular occurance...) |

| The 1.0 firmware was clearly rushed.
The current beta was not really "leaked", but is available from netgear (See news story: »:/hosted/equip,9 ) with the disclaimer that it is not supported. -- Where in the world is LA/OC ? |
|
 | Have they fixed:
1) dyndns.org support? 2) Is it logging attempts at remore login? 3) Does there seem to be a change in performance?
Can't wait to test this weekend...

 | reply to vito I bought one of these boxes to test for placement in our remote offices.
At first, I was not very happy with this router, at all.
This upgraded firmware has made me quite pleased that I purchsed the FVS318 though.
It has definitely increased in speed of loading web pages. The new diagnostic tools are a very nice add-on, as well as the improved content filtering (ie the java, activeX, etc).
After seeing this firmware, I now believe this product was very much rushed to market.
Hopefully, Netgear will not be lax with future firmware updates.
It would be nice to have manual control over which PFS and HA encryptions are chosen, as well as replay protection. Perhaps a future implementation of AES? |

Successes and now logged. Same as locals. They weren't before. Attempts and failures are not logged so you still can't tell if someone is trying to hack in. James -- Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead ! |

vito join:2001-11-28 Gilbertsville, PA | reply to vito Yesterday I updated the firmware to 101l So far I have seen much improvement.
The router is in a production environment. Main: LAN 65 pc 1mb sdsl Router is downstream from a speed stream VPN is connected to our Remote Constant downloading, ftp, mail, terminal server. Ran multiple port scans to see if I could get it to drop Plus running streaming radio
1st remote: 25 pc Cable access Fvs318 firmware 1.0 (I will update this prob. Today) vpn to main Constant downloading, ftp, mail, terminal server.
2nd remote 3 pc Fvs318 firmware 101 l Vpn to main Normal activity, connecting to main threw vpn/terminal server
Since the update at the main site: Drop connections seem to stop Ban list still seems to have issues. It works but with it on I get drop connections. I am using the ban list to filter banner ads like x10, double-click. So this just might be too much for it now.
I will be testing more over the week end. |
