Re: fvs318- beta firmware quote: Is this with the L version? Also can you dumb you comment down a bit for my benefit. Not sure how this solves the problem and also can't see why this should be necessary; the link should just stay up like it does on my RT314.
Yes, it still applies to L1.01.
The FVS polls a set of NTP servers to see if the internet connection is still working. Unless it receives responses from enough of them, it assumes that the link has failed, and it drops and restarts the PPPoE connection. Seems like a sensible enough idea, but the numbers of required responses was set too high.
Manually specifying an NTP server has the side effect of changing the link-alive test - I suspect it only uses the nominated server.
For some reason, you don't seem to be able to get to as many NTP servers from Telstra ADSL as you can from most other networks, but the problem could obviously occur anywhere.
It will be fixed in M1.01. |

Then now get the IP addresses totally wrong in the security log: Tues, 08/13/2002 08:09:10 - Get NTP Time: Tues, 08/13/2002 08:09:10 Tues, 08/13/2002 08:09:18 - Successful administrator login - Source:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN - Destination:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN Tues, 08/13/2002 08:09:28 - Administrator logout - Source:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN - Destination:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN Tues, 08/13/2002 08:09:41 - Successful administrator login - Source:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN - Destination:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN Tues, 08/13/2002 08:10:14 - Administrator logout - Source:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN - Destination:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN Tues, 08/13/2002 08:10:22 - Successful administrator login - Source:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN - Destination:0.0.0.0, 0, WAN -- Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead ! |

I loaded J1.01 beta firmware for the FVS318 and... In my experience J1.01 beta hasn't fixed the problem with logins and slow/dropped connections I experienced. I bought three of these routers and all three have so far been useless for our needs, that is, being able to block sites, access secure sites and have good performance when accessing mail and web sites. They DO make nice paperweights for my inbox though.
On the login problem, I submitted dumps, router configs, test procedures and logs to the beta support E-mail with read receipt requested. They haven't yet acknowledged receipt after approx 48 hours so I don't know if they have the stuff or not. I also have a problem open with a level 2 guy who committed to providing me status yesterday, but I haven't heard from him yet. My feeling is that he is trying, but the product isn't ready yet.
This is quite a departure from when Netgear's stuff worked well out of the box. I suspect they were sold on overseas development, QA and support as a cost cutting measure and are now reaping some unexpected consequences of their decision.
On the good side, they have added some of the features I was hoping for: ** Locally administered MAC address for spoofing ** Can enable NetBIOS traffic over VPN tunnel ** Outbound Services Blocking ** added Syslog for sending log entries to a syslog server ** They also claim to support LINKLOGGER. A nice utility... See ( »www.linklogger.com )

 jefff0 join:2002-03-14 Australia | I suggest you try L1.01 or M1.01.
A bug that can affect performance on website access and also interfere with some SSL site access was fixed after J1.01. |

| Loaded M1.01 and... I loaded M1.01 - it looks like SUCCESS! I am able to access the SSL site that was a 100% failure on J1.01 and 1.00...
Also, the web page loading is significantly better, especially with jhtml. DNS lookups are no longer seen as "suspicious activity". It did log, however, another Chinese guy port scanning against my IP address (Heh - Some things never change).
Thanks for the tip and access to M1.01 - I will continue to test and post results, the least I can do for the folks on this board. I'll also update with any info I get from netgear.
Now it's time to play with the new toy.
You Aussies rock on!

Re: I loaded J1.01 beta firmware for the FVS318 and... Jefff
Which ISP are you using? Which settings have you configured from the defaults? If using PPPoE have you set MTU to 1492? If using Bigpond DSL have you used the FQDN for SMTP or the short form version. I'm still having trouble getting email out and accessing secure/SSL sites. |

EGeezerSummertimePremium join:2002-08-04 Midwest kudos:7 | Note to geezergeek - Loading M1.01 Beta - I'm using Time Warner here at my home, Ohio USA. 1500 MTU size, no special setup. Using DHCP on WAN side. Site blocking still turned off. POP3 /SMTP works fine on M1.01 beta so far. . |

Re: I loaded J1.01 beta firmware for the FVS318 and... With L1.01 and M1.01, you shouldn't need to change the router's MTU setting from the default 1500. (Cable or ADSL)
Re your FQDN question, I assume you are talking about the setting in Outlook etc. If the PC has the correct domain suffix, either set statically or via dhcp, the simple name should suffice. Check it by trying to ping the simple name from your PC. If it resolves the IP correctly, then the simple name should work fine in Outlook.
If you are still having trouble, are you able to collect a trace and email it to me? |
|
 | Thanks guys - I'm hopping my problem may be as simple as the setup screen - not sure if I put the Account name in correctly. I'll check when I'm on site later in the day |

Re: fvs318- beta firmware Well I finally gave up - couldn't get the SMTP or some SSL to work so I'll be swapping it over - local Netgear folk say I'm the only one with a problem with the M version so...
I'll report in when I get the replacement |

Re: Loaded M1.01 and... I seem to have problems with the browser finding proxy settings and also loading web pages. Lots of missing buttons, thumbnails and other GIFs on normally reliable sites.
Oh well, back to the traces. Beta support has still not acknowledged my support problem three days ago. It sure isn't the same Netgear I used to know. |

Re: fvs318- beta firmware i tried 1.01j, l and m and the stupid thing still drops tcp sessions despite netgear's claim that it's fixed. here's a good way to test this. open 1-2 telnet sessions and then do some www browsing. pretty soon the telnet sessions will be dropped and there's an entry in the firewall log confirming it.
i'm beginning to get the feeling that this technological miracle will go back where it came from. what a waste of time and money. |

Terminating idle sessions isn't all that bad of an idea but there should be a configuration option on just how long a session needs to be idle before it's terminated. The user should be able to specify a value high enough for his/her own environment. I sent this suggestion to betabugs 3 days ago and have not received a reply. fvs318- beta firmware support I re-sent my problem report email to them asking whether they had received it. Here is the complete text of their reply:
"Thank you for you response will will keep you up to date on firmware for the FVS318, "
The level 2 guy was supposed to email me status of firmware Monday. Will let you all know when I receive that.
This gives me a level of confidence I haven't experienced since the time I pulled the rip cord and my primary chute didn't open... |
