phrider join:1999-12-17 Los Angeles, CA | Anyone else down in LA except me? My line in the mid-Wilshire area of LA went out at about 2:30pm. Anyone else have this problem? |

 | Hmmm...I have Sprint Ion also, but it's still on...I don't know what could cause the problem in your case. I too am located in mid-wilshire area. By the way did you find another carrier to replace the current line? We have not much time and I can't really find any good carriers...Anyone have any recommendations? T.I.A |

·CYBERONIC INTERN..
| LA Alternatives and Reliability I'm back up. I had to wait over the weekend (when a major project was in progress) before Sprint could send a technician out to confirm what I knew from bitter experience: PacBell has screwed up the line pair again, at the "B box" this time. So 92 hours of waiting for Sprint and 4 hours for PacBell.
Being without broadband when a key project was due has sent me in a new direction. I am trying to get two broadband connections and a dual WAN router. Hopefully I won't be down again unless we are having even bigger problems (like another big EQ or civil unrest or other unspoken things).
So I am going with Cyberonic DSL (with Worldcom as the carrier) using shared-line DSL. Hopefully this shared-line will reduce the number of times PacBell accidentally steals the line pair. And Cyberonic offers 1.5Mb down/ 768 kb up for $50 month without a contract, and operates out of the MidWilshire CO (93X-xxxx numbers and others).
Did you notice I said "trying to get" above? PacBell is having problems getting the DSL working on the same line on which I had Earthlink DSL until 19 months ago when I switched to ION. Yes, there have been cabling changes and other things since then, but REALLY -- it was a new overhead cable for the neighborhood so it should be BETTER. PacBell has been out 3 or 4 times on this one line.
As a backup, I am also getting AT&T cable internet. At least they offer a specific install time window and date.
When they're all working individually, I'll get a dual WAN router.... or just do manual switch overs. Note that these 2 broadband connections leave me with an upload that is probably going to be as fast as ION/ Sprint Biz DSL, a slower download (even when combined), but a lower monthly bill.
We'll see if it is more hassle or less, especially when it comes to accessing the office VPN. I may step up from a Nexland Turbo Pro 800 to a Symantec 200 or even a lowend Cisco.... |
