LOL sorry if someone already mentioned the link. My idea was to send some of these to covad, but covad will not honor them. So if we address them to speakeasy or another isp (like mcmercer got), is there a possibility that they might honor them?

Kinda weird that mcmercer's story does not match up with speakeasy, covad, covad safetynet, and others, but I am not one to judge, he might be right .

Kinda weird to doubt what someone posts too, mwireman. Covad did send me the self-release switch-to-covad.net package, and I did send it to Speakeasy instead, and I did get switched to Speakeasy less than 24 hours later. I don't know WHY this worked for me, but I'd guess it had something to do with Speakeasy telling Covad something like "Hey, if you're willing to take the customer from Flashcom to your ISP, you have to let US have him if that's what he wants."

As to why I got the Covad package at all? Probably because 1) I did in fact get Flashcom to release me from contract BEFORE they went chapter 11, so legally they weren't required to get bankruptcy court approval,

and 2) I was a real pain-in-the-butt about sending Flashcom, Covad, and Speakeasy e-mails a couple of times a week about it no matter how many times I got a "boilerplate" reply that they couldn't do anything.

Believe it or not, I got switched. YMMV. If you didn't get an OK from Flashcom to get out of your contract BEFORE 12/8/2000 though, I think you're probably out of luck.

I'm sorry . Maybe I should have rephrased - that it is weird that everyone doubts everyone. Like I said, I don't know who is telling the truth and who is not, as many have lied to me in the process, including flashcom, covad, and some other people on dslr (not you ). Like I said, I was nobody to judge!

I envy you and thank you VERY MUCH for posting your initial self-release news, and I am/was trying to get one myself. Speakeasy, flashcom, and covad were going back and forth. Covad acted like there was no way anybody could have gotten one. Flashcom wouldn't sign anything. Speakeasy said it was possible. So what I intended to say that your story didn't match up with theirs AS WELL as that theirs don't match up with anyone else's.

I now understand how it worked for you (lucky you! ) Sorry!

Hey, no problem. I know how frustrated I was about trying to get out of Flashcom, and it ended up being an almost 2.5 month process.

The upside if you're still stuck with Flashcom is that technically, they never were all that bad, especially in Covad areas. I probably never had more than 4 hours total downtime from them in 21 months of service. And that was only 2 incidents, not a lot of short-term outages. The only reasons I was so eager to switch were the prospect of their impending demise, thus wanting to get off them BEFORE coming home to a dead line, and their inability to EVER get the billing right.

But the connectivity was no problem. Now that they are in Chapter 11, it actually may help stabilize things since their creditors can't easily cut them off. So at least there's a plan for a transition. My guess is that once you've reached the 1-year contract point, you should be able to get a release without a problem or have a self-release honored.

Prior to that, you may just be stuck. But since the line is still up, that's not necessarily a bad thing, just a frustration in principle. Good luck!

Mark
