Unofficial Router FAQ

Chelle : Here are some general troubleshooting and set up tips for the Linksys and Netgear routers.

Thanks to zedsdead for compiling the information. :)

General Setup for a Linksys BERSR home router:
----------------------------------------------
1. Connect all PC's that you wish to share internet access with to the LAN ports on the router. Make sure all PC's are set to use DHCP to obtain an IP address. NOTE: If you use the uplink port on the router LAN Port 1 will be disabled.

2. Connect the your cablemodem to the WAN port on the router.

3. Plug in and power on the router. You should see the power light on the router illuminate followed by the red DIAG light. The DIAG light will stay light for a few seconds while the router is performing some self tests.

4. Turn on your cablemodem.

5. Turn on one of the PC and point your web browser to »192.168.1.1 (default IP of the router).

6. A username/password box will appear, leave the username field blank and type in the password admin. It's recommended you change these later on.

7. Set the following options under the Setup tab:
You do not need to give the router a hostname or domain name to connect to the Cogeco network. Set the WAN IP address to "Obtain and IP Address Automatically". Set the PPPoE option to disable. Click the Apply button.

Click the Password tab and change the username and password to your choosing. THIS IS IMPORTANT!

8. Restart the router and your computer, enjoy sharing your internet access.

Netgear routers
---------------
1. Connect the PC's you want to share the internet with to one of the 4 LAN ports on the Netgear router. NOTE: if you connect the router to a hub or switch, you can connect it to any port on the hub or switch, it does not necessarily have to be the uplink. The Netgear will automatically configure the port automatically.

2. Turn on the router, cablemodem and one of your PC's. Configure the PC to Obtain and IP Address Automatically and point your webbrowser to »192.168.0.1

3. You will receive a username/passoword prompt. Type in the username admin and the password 1234. Change this later!

4. Select Wizard Setup.

5. Enter a name for your router and the domain name. It doesn't really matter if you make these up or not.

6. Select Ethernet as the standard encapuslation and click next.

7. For WAN IP address select Get Automatically From ISP (Default). Select the same for DNS server assignment. Leave WAN MAC address as factory default.

8. Click finish. Bask in your shared internet access glory.

Troubleshooting
---------------

1. Can't connect to the router
- Make sure the router is turned on (duh!) and that your using straight ethernet cables and the connections are good.
- Ensure your machine is picking up an IP address in the 192.168.x.2-254 range.

2. TEST/DIAG light stays lit after power on.
- There is a problem with the firmware or router itself. Flash firmware to newest version. If this doesn't work or is not possible to do return your router to where you purchased it from.

3. Can't browse, etc.
- Some routers have been known to lock up from time to time. Power off the router, wait 30 secs and power it back on. Does it work now?

- Run winipcfg and make sure you are receiving an IP address in the 192.168.x.x range from the router. Try pinging the default gateway IP and see if you are getting replies. If you are then make sure your cablemodem is online. If it is try connecting a PC directly to the modem, release and renew your IP address. If you sucessfully renewed your IP it should now be a 24.x.x.x IP address, can you surf? Good, something is wrong with your router or ethernet cabling/connectors.

4. Router can't obtain a WAN IP address.
- Assuming your modem is online, make sure that you have a link light (or PC light) lit green on the modem and the WAN port on the router. Make sure you are using a straight cable as opposed to a crossover cable. If not then your ethernet cable is bad or the connectors on it are bad.

- If that's not the case then power off the modem for about a minute to clear it's arp cache. Turn it back on and see if it's working now.

- If that still didn't work, plug your PC directly into the modem and release/renew the IP. Did it obtain one?

Still having trouble? You may want to try one of the hardware forums listed here

[text was edited by author 2002-09-10 17:00:37]
