They must be on crack. If you sign up with just SBC, you can get a connection of 1.5-6mbps/384kbps for $160 with a 2 year contract, and 5 static ips as well as $80 per month (first 3 months). -- Fiber Optics - God bless those that perished on 9/11/01 |

| $160 bucks!!! Need to give a faster upload for that price. [text was edited by author 2002-09-12 20:37:42] |

 | The thing is the downstream, which is excellent for the price, as is the upload. I'd pay for it if they included some Directv service for free. -- Fiber Optics - God bless those that perished on 9/11/01 |

| reply to keasons 11 email boxes isn't bad, especially considering that most people won't use more than four or five of them.
The one that really caught my eye was the last one. Basically, your equipment is free (standard these days for any DSL package, never pay for a modem), IP dynamic (typical for residential DSL) and a $120.00 rebate with the year-long commitment that any other DSL vendor will make you sign anyway. At forty bucks a month, you get basically three free months once you do the rebate, unless they try to jack you out of it.
However, this upload speed is deplorable. I feel bad for the guy who signs a year contract thinking he'll kick butt at Unreal Tournament on option 3, and if he's really serious about gaming, cable is better for much cheaper. God, ISDN gives the same upload, but I don't even know of anybody who does unlimited ISDN anymore. Anybody heard anything about that?
I also noticed on the promo page that their prices aren't very easy to get to, but I noticed something interesting: they state quite clearly that the self-install option can't be used in the ordering if you have a router. The best option is to have a tech-minded friend available after the initial hookup to configure everything for a pizza and a six-pack rather than paying (most likely) $50.00 a to SBC tech to do it for you. I could be wrong, but from previous posts on this board. I've heard ping times on DSL are much better and more reliable than cable when it comes to gaming. [text was edited by author 2002-09-16 11:04:12] |

 | Depends where you are..........DSL is better for some.........while Cable is better for others..........Just research the area you live in and find out first before buying......... |

 | reply to Zombiegoat It's been about 6 months since I signed up with DirecTV here in Northern California. At the time was the best deal for the money. Looking at SBC, 6 months later, it amazes me that DTV still is a better deal. I get Static IP, up to 1.5Mbps (average 1.3Mb), I think 256k up load, 1 year contract, including various e-mail accounts, and a webpage, etc. 3 first months were free, 49.99 there after. All was handled through the Web, all equipment free. Installation was 15 min (connect the modem to either USB or Ethernet). No problems since. What's wrong with this picture? |
