I've got a plan...

Just stop selling music. F*ck it. They can't have it their way, so just quit already.

Take the money you've already made for the past, what, 100 years-go screw yourselves. This 1984ish bullsh*t just reeks of idiocy at it's highest level.

Piracy does not condone idiocy.

Don't you mean it reeks of corporate greed? the record companies have been screwing us over since the 1960's. now they balk when given a taste of their own medicine! no longer do i have to pay $17.99 for a piece of plastic that costs less than a penny apiece (in bulk) to the record companies. When you can condense 15 cds to one compilation cd it sure minimizes the cd swapping in and out. i now have 'custom cds' that have every song i like. no filler

Corporate greed = idiocy.

Yeah, you're correct; they sure don't like a taste of their own medicine.

I concur about compilation CD's as well. Why, for the love of God, would they want to stop consumers from customizing a mix CD to their own individual tastes? Hello? Paid subscription service? They are largely responsible for the fractured landscape that is the music industry today. Tastes are seldom easily categorized (at least all of the people I discuss music with) as there are soooooooo many choices, so many genres, sub-genres, and sub-sub-genres that they are just stupid dinosaurs for attempting to stop progress.

I once had a long, drunken debate with a struggling musician on this topic. It was 2 years ago. He took the Metallica take on this; it is his art, and he demands to be paid for every blessed copy out there. Hell, I agree to a certain extent, through a paid subscription service. He didn't want his art on the internet at all, period as he felt the medium encourages "piracy". He could not see the power of free distribution as a vehicle for exposure to a wider audience he couldn't reach with 8.5/11 fliers stapled to a telephone pole in his own town. I drove him to insanity with one phrase: "It's too late, it's too late-it's already happening right now and you can't stop it."

My favorite band, My Morning Jacket (www.mymorningjacket.com) (sorry, shameless promotion plug) was discovered by folks in the Netherlands, and through their website, countless others have discovered them as well. They just signed to a major label, and barely three years after their start in the biz. I can't help but think the internet and file sharing had a major impact on that rise to success.

When your friend started whining about getting paid for every copy of thier "art" they stopped being a true artist!
Real artist musicians just want to play music they enjoy and hope others will enjoy it as well. Getting paid is a benefit. Getting rich should not be the main emphisis for making music.
And yes I am an artist musician.
