HERE IT IS CINDYREDHEAD REPORT RE: Registry Tweak

I been uploading five different type of file to a FTP server for the last three hours. the main answer to everybodys question "Does this really help are uploads?" and the answer is IT DEPENDS. Not the answer that most want to hear. It does help the upload and some time a whole hell of a lot. But that where it gets to be tricky. It is not stable at all. One in about every third upload i did was real good. the other 2/3 were just ok. But to be honest. It does increase the upload speeds. here are some of the 28 uploads test I did.

Without Reg. Tweak

I use DU meter Stopwatch to monitor all uploads. All these were uncompressed. Files were the same and were upload to same FTP Server. Was done on a Compaq Presario 5420 US, 512 sdram, XPPRO, Standard direcway. I will post more on what I found out later today. I got some stuff that I need to do now. The bottom line is it does help. But it is very unstable and it is a hit and miss. You do get a little help every time. But getting the big jumps varys a lot. Please let me know if anybody would like me to post about other uploads later. Also I did some e-mail upload and the bottom line on that is good. It seems to ave. out to cut e-mail upload time by 50%. I will be doing some other test tonight. Please post if you have read this thread. Also let me know if you want me to post other test result later tonight.--

Re: HERE IT IS CINDYREDHEAD REPORT

Excellent work Cindy. That's about the results I got while testing. I think the wide variations is speeds might also be due to the latency of our satellite connections. I also noticed a boost in the upload speeds when others were uploading from me using p2p applications and messenger services. Once again thanks for the great work.

Hi Cindy,
I have not installed this tweak, taking a wait/see attitude. I do, however, appreciate your efforts for the forum.

Re: HERE IT IS CINDYREDHEAD REPORT RE: Registry Tweak

Thanks for all that work Cindy. Very cool. One thing you mentioned was that the files were not compressed. Actually you uploaded mostly highly compressed files (MP3, JPG and MPEG) and at least one uncompressed text file. That's a good thing.

So far I haven't been able to duplicate the findings of Cindy, Sandy and others, and I won't be able to really get into this anymore at least until the weekend. I am wondering why I can't duplicate these tests though, so you can bet I'll be trying.

One thing I would like for folks to try, if they haven't already, is to time the results with a stopwatch rather than using a computer based program that could feasibly be rendered inaccurate by a change in the way the socket is handling the data. It looks to me that the email upload tests were done that way, but it would be nice to be sure.

If anyone is as serious as Cindy was about thoroughly testing and needs an FTP site to upload to for testing, drop me an IM and I'll set you up.

Would the timer in WSFTP be considered accurate? If so, that's how my results were produced. If not, I don't mind re-doing them tonight.

Heck if I know. We are in uncharted territory here so I'm trying to eliminate any possibility of the results being skewed by messing around with how applications communicate. But my results were as reported by WS FTP as well, and I didn't have any luck, so go figure.

Well I decided to conduct some tests myself and see what the results were. It seems the tweak works!

Here is my setup:

One PC running direcway 4.0.1.28 Service Pack A. 990 Mhz
This machine is running Windows 2000 Professional
This PC also runs Winroute Pro, FAPBuster, and DUMeter. It acts as the gateway for entire network.

I ran the FTP tests on a seperate PC running Windows XP Pro and NO TWEAKS. It is connected via 100mb ethernet to an accelar switch (as is the router PC).

To conduct the tests, I simply sent a 1.3 meg jpeg file to my website.

Here is the results:

Before Tweaks:
355.70 seconds 3.89 Kbytes/second

b000:
(1st) 183.13 seconds 7.55 Kbytes/second
(2nd) 179.11 seconds 7.72 Kbytes/second

17a00:
262.25 seconds 5.27 Kbytes/second

Run in the order:
before, b000 (1st), 17a00, b000 (second)

So, by looking at these results, and the fact that the client was not touched at all, there is something going on here between the DW software and the tweak. It is a marked improvement!

More info,

Jim Olsen

Thanks, Cindyredhead. There seems to be some difference opinion about a related issue: i.e., whether this tweak should or SHOULD NOT be used on systems that run Win98SE or OS's other than XP. What's the definitive word on that issue?

Related question: is there any evidence that you get better satellite DL and/or UL with Win XP, versus earlier OS's?

Never cease to be amazed at how on top of things the folks at this forum are. It has become my first reading of the morning.

I have two dishes and was planning to use them both. But other half had to be on most of the night. I have two computers that are the same inside and out. I am trying to get a hold of win2k and winme and 98 to load on my computer to find out if this is just an xp tweak or not. As soon as i can get a hold of the other OS I will be at it again. If anybody has a direct question that they want to ask me go ahead and I.M. be back on later tonight. NEED SOME SLEEP LOL
I am a true redhead. But if I keep doing these alnighters I will TRULY be a WHITEhead lol

Also I did time mine with a stop watch in my hand and with DU Meters stop watch. They were the same every time. So if you use DU Meter stopwatch. It does time right.

Well joe, I can tell you this much. The path that Fred (Sat_Man) listed in the other thread:
..................................................

If you want to try it here are the instructions...
Open Run and type in regedit click ok.

click on
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Services
AFD
...................................................
Doesn't include the AFD listing. Can another ME user and a Win98se user or two confirm this?;)

Your uploads prior to SP1 were impossible. It was a java script error that SP 1 repaired.

indydevbrian,
Those triple-digit upload speeds prior to the 11th are flukes and in no way represent your 'real' upload speeds. What installing SP1 probably did was set straight something that was haywire with your Java.

To determine your 'real world' upload speeds internet tests such as the Java-based DSLR ones and the Active X based PC Pitstop one are a poor choice as they don't perform well (or accurately) with high-latency satellite connections.
The best measure of your upload speeds is to do some FTP uploads with a program that logs the speeds (such as CuteFTP or WS-FTP).

A few prelim tests from me tonight to a lightly loaded FTP server...

OK, here's tonights results.
Without tweak
.pdf, 1330kb, 7:31sec, 24.434 kbps WS_FTP Pro
.exe, 1559kb, 9:34, 22.447 kbps

With 17a00 Tweak

.pdf, 5:37, 34.762 kbps
.exe, 6:57, 32.435 kbps

Over 40% increase tonight with tweak, I don't believe it! (33 / 23)
With the tweak I saw 12KB/sec at start of upload then it tapered down to the norm, would be in line with the buffer filling. Also saw same transmit continue 15 sec beyond program @ 100%. Times are until ack from FTP server. Rates are from WS log.
I'll try again around 9am EDT time tomorrow to see if it's the same.

As soon as I get some other OS to load. I will be doing some more test. I will be able to use both dishes when I get them. This has got me going. I keep thinking that if tweaking the REG. did as much as it did for XP what other tweaks are there to push this to its limit. I wonder if Hughes will put out a S.P. soon. LOL (nothing about being beta testers I want to do this)But I want to get into this deeply and see what has really happen here. Also there has to be a way to do ME OS and others if they don't have a AFD. I want to find it. If anybody would like to help some I would like to do some E-mail upload test. Could use a few from around the states. please I.M. me with a few.
