DSL Lines, how do ISPs differ if they all lease?

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I don't know that much about DSL. Correct me if i'm wrong, but ISPs lease their lines from your local TELCO, correct? so in essence everyone is using the same type of lines to transfer their information.. How does this make any ISP different from another? I was thinking of switching over to IBS since they offer a great 768/768 deal. My flashcom service has been terrific, I don't know about other areas but i've ALWAYS got decent speeds with 384/384.

the difference is in the backbone. After the signal/information gets from your house to the CO, it has to get out there on the web. The more efficient your ISP the better. That is over simplistic, try this:

The actual speed you experience when using the Internet depends on many factors. The ISP may have insufficient bandwidth to the Internet to properly support all of the users who log on (this is like an airline overbooking an aircraft -- good for them, bad for you). The Web server (or e-mail server) that you are connecting to may be unable to handle the volume of traffic that it is experiencing (often true at popular sites). Or the problem may lie in the path between you and the server through the Internet (round-trip times can vary from a few hundredths of a second to several seconds).
