Re: Slow performance on east coast/Pittsburgh 2nite?

They said the problem seems to be with Genuity and they suggested that I ask customer service to be switched over to Qwest. I will let you know how it goes.

I don't know if the switch to Qwest already happened but I did another line loss test and got worse results

If that's the case, call back and ask them for a temporary password. Use install1 as the username and the password they give you for QWEST. install2 will give you Genuity. I'm relatively sure but I may have them reversed so just try install1 and install2. Temporary passwords are given out to customers when a valid problem is there, which in this case it sure seems to be. They last typically 24 hours, and expire sometime in the morning, 7AM or 8AM if I recall.

All you need to do is just call tech support, tell them you would like to see if the problem is with Genuity as you were told by a prior support agent and just ask for a temporary password. Use it to log in and see if your lag goes away.

HTH once again

It's still possible that the problem is Genuity which is much of Verizon's backbone even when using Qwest as the GSP.

I don't think it has but the change over was instant and done by the billing rep in real time as far as i recall.

One way to know if it took place is to see if your IP pool assignment has changed. I'm sure you know your normal IP. For example mine is 141.155.x.y

If I was to switch over to Qwest right now, I'd end up with a radically different IP which would be difficult not to notice (this is only for the BA areas, or from what I've seen here in NY and Jersey) ..

For me,

A Genuity IP is normally 141.155.x.y - FQDN pool-141-155-x-y.ny5030.east.verizon.net

A Qwest IP would probably be 151.201.x.y - FQDN pool-151-201-x-y.ny5030.east.verizon.net (infact a friend with Qwest using Verizon not far away is online right now with that hostmask)

Another way for me to find out ( which *may* be the case in other former BA parts ) is observing the way the routers are named.

Note the bold part on my third hop - the G in "G-RTR2.ny5030.verizon-gni.net seems to be Genuity. When using Qwest, I see "Q-RTRx" in the below example.

3 F0-1-0.G-RTR2.NY5030.verizon-gni.net [141.155.x.xx]

.. helping to unravel the mysteries a little and passing on some observations - /w hth

Does this mean someone knows there is a problem and is being checked on?

The tech support person I just spoke to said he doesn't see any info about a problem with Genuity or Quest (I have Quest), or any problems for that matter.

I told him I was just reporting the problem and really did not want to go through all the standard routine to check my computer, my lines or whatever etc, because a lot of people are having problems, so it's obviously not my computer/modem/lines/etc.

I expected a hassle about it, but he just took the info and suggested that if I still had the problem tonight that I call back to see if there was any info about it.

So we'll see.

MY GOODNESS!!!!

First consider this trace. Looks like it's a Genuity issue in MD (?) area

Another observation,

I stream music from someone in Pittsburg on a 7.1/768 line

Look at this - no wonder I can't get a decent stream. I was wondering about it earlier this morning before seeing this thread -
