Re: Sure Web Based Speed Testers are accurate ! said by garypen: The unscientific results are that web pages simply appear faster, and I don't get stuck waiting like a moron until I get an error message and realize I need to hit the refresh button because the original packet got lost.
I tried different MTU settings and found 576 to be best. I also disabled Discovery. Both of these actions are frowned upon by DSLReports Tweaks pages. But, the proof is in the no-fat, sugar-free, instant pudding substitute.
It looks like Sprint BB has a really bad upstream channel an in these situations larger packets get lost/corrupted more often. In general, with a normal functioning connection larger MTU will give you better results.
You can check your re-transmitted IP packets from windows command line by entering the command:
netstat -s
What is Segments Sent vs Segments Retransmitted under TCP Statistics? If it is more than 2% it is bad! On a normal internet connection this is generally around 0.5-1% or less.
When you are lowering the MTU to 576 you are doing this for both upload and download. If your download has no problem I suggest you leave MTU setting of the adapter as it is and just turn PMTU Discovery off which means you'll still download using large packets but transmit 576 byte packets.
Again normal tweaks are probably counter productive for you because of low quality of upstream channel. [text was edited by author 2001-02-15 15:27:11] |

Ugg over 11%!
This from sector 191, SJ area. MTU set at 1100, path discovery off. |

Anon | reply to DrTCP Thank you-I think you hit i right on the head. The U/L channel is terrible vs the d/l for SprintBBD. Funny thing is, there is NO reason for this to be except for them being too cheap to upgrade the u/l side to match the d/l. NONE.
1500 is the default for ethernet, so I will try 100 MTU with the packets set to LARGE, and Path Discovery set to OFF.
To the other guy whose speeds came up, it is the combonation that is helping you but you should realize that going from 41 to 77, while nice and all, still STINKS when you figure that they promised us upwards of 156 up and the rest of the world on SBBD is getting 150+ regularly. We in San Jose, especially those in Sector 169, are being treated like 2nd class customers despite paying our fees just as everyone else is. I honestly believ that they just don't give a damn and are just signing people up as much ans\d as fast as they can and performance be damned, afterall , it will get better later. YEAH RIGHT. |

Thanks for your help on the DrTCP settings. I'll try them. I guess you oughta know!

I cleared the adapter's MTU setting, restoring default, but kept PMTU Discovery off. It really made quite a difference in the download speed. The upload speed seems to have gone down a scosh, but still about double what it was before the original tweak.
My retransmitted packet % is currently at 1.9%. It originally went up after I made the recommended changes, but down this morning. |
