cisco 2501 ios ?

I've received two 2501 Cisco routers. So I guess first off how can I go about the newer ios 12.x? I tried Cisco but since I’m only a guest user, they don't give access to their ios files, is there somewhere else or a way to change this so that I may get a current image before I begin learning about the Cisco world?

Will upgrading also erase the current config info since I do not have the passwords?

You might be able to find them on a P2P,but duno if i would trust anything from that. OR if you have access to a router with a newer IOS you can copy that one. What is the current ver of IOS you have? Also you can get passed the passwords without upgrading the IOS. To start your own config.

Even if you had a copy of a newer image you could not upgrade to it without being able to access enable (privileged) mode on the router.

Here is a link to instructions for eliminating or resetting your enable passwords.

And no, upgrading will not blow away your current configuration if properly done.

Neotrace0,

Another way is to purchase smartnet from Ebay, and register your router. You will be able to download IOS, and access Cisco site for 1 year.

How much FLASH and DRAM do you have on your 2501's?

To run any 12.x IOS, you will need 16MB FLASH and 8 MB DRAM.

To see how much memory your 2501 has, issue the command "show version" from an enable prompt.

I have 2501 w/ 8Mb Flash and 16D and running 12.x IOS. You don't have to have 16F to run 12.x.

I was able to find the password reset information I needed, but i'm a newbie so it just took a lil' bit of understanding.

Please help me figure out if I need more memory for the lastest IOS from Cisco. Router God I may just take you up on that offer since a college budget may not allow for purchasing of Cisco support?

The latest release for your 2501 will be IOS Version 12.2.12a.

The IP/FW PLUS IPSEC 56 version requires 16Mb Flash and 10Mb RAM.

Seeing as you have 16Mb Flash and 16Mb RAM on both routers, you won't have a problem running this version.

I'm fixing to order the following cables for my two routers

DB60 to DB60 6 Feet USD$ 20.00 1 USD$ 20.00
10Base-T (RJ45) to AUI Ethernet Transceiver USD$ 12.00 1 USD$ 12.00

So basically there's a cable to connect the two routers and one to connect to the rest of the world (my network, should I get another AUI > ethernet converter for the other router, or just connect the two, and then have just one connect outward?

Please bear with me on this!

If you are using a back to back cable from one serial to another serial, make sure you set the end that is the DCE as the clock rate. At least one must be set to clocking.

Also if you only get one transceiver, you will be able once configured to get both to go through the one tranciever. You can also flash it through the other router through the transciever, but I would just move it to that router if you need to flash the IOS.

So: you dont really need 2 transcievers, unless you want to configure another one with e0 , etc. One will do. If you use one trans, and connect through the back to back cable make sure your subnets are correct and you some sort of routing protocol ie. rip, running so when you are logged into the router that does not have a trans, you it will be able not to only conect to the other through the back to back, but be able to see that others ip address on the e0 to go outbound.
