Actually, Shark is correct .... The highest speeds you'll ever see on OOL are about 1.08-1.11 mB/s. (Motorolas may show higher "spikes", but those are an anomaly unique to that MODEM and not your actual download speeds.)

OOL FTP test 1.02 MB / Sec (based on 1024 as in File size)

NYC.Speakeasy.net : 8111 kbps Down and 895 kbps up (based on rounded Transfer rate of 1000)

lets do some quick math

1.02 MB /sec translates into 8355.84 kbps by file size yet 8160 kbps in transfer rate (according to the powers that be who came up with the rounding measure). That is not bad when dealing with battle of FTP vs Java speed tests
Look~~> 8111 vs 8160

So quit barking up the wrong tree and try to understand the difference of

-MB/Sec vs Mbps
-KB/Sec vs Kbps

Or should I say HD File Size VS Network Transfer Rate

Microsoft site = 998 KB/Sec! screaming downloads period. I was even able to achieve a 700 KB/ Sec download from File Planet for the Americas Army Demo (now that is scary) Also if you use a line monitoring program like NetStat Live you can display the results in File size or Network transfer rate.

There is something going on here. It may be his box. I just don't know.

If he can ping the Default Gateway, it is either a very slow rDNS or some type of firewall on his box that is blocking responses from the 10.x domain. I think some of the routers do this because it is a Private IP coming in from the WAN, they log it as IP spoofing.

Well a CMTS works as a router of sorts, and I assume that is what he was referring to when he said "Some of these prevent pinging/tracert as a security measure."

The fact that the CMTS does not respond to to the tracert is not important since every ICMP that goes through it is low while still on the OOL network. If he entered a name in the host file for 10.45.0.1 it might not time out, but it also might be for security reasons not responding to the ICMP. If he can PING 10.45.0.1 and it answers then maybe a reverse DNS problem.

Charlie: Speed tests ar not the most accurate measure of your actual speed. Downloading from our FTP site gives you a better idea. Once you leave our network and have to cross various routers, that is going to have an affect on your speed.
ME: since many other OOL members who i told to download certain files from the same site get speeds of 800kb/sec when i get 200kb/sec or even less
Charlie: I did some tests and all the signals to your modem are fine.
ME: what about the pings?
ME: are they higher than usual, i've had other people ping me , that's what they said
Charlie: I was able to ping your modem with 1 meg packets and the ping times were 10ms or less.

First, as you've seen in this and other threads, there's been a general slow down in parts of LI during peak evening hours lately. You might be seeing some of that.

Second, as Josh Said, you may be somewhat limited by 80211.b. You could try hard wiring to your router or directly to your SB4100 to see if that's an issue.

And third... the BEFW11S4 has a 10 mb/s WAN port. Thus the well known issue between the SB4100 and 10 mb WAN port routers will be seen. The best speeds with that combo will be in the ~5 mb/s range.

So if you want to pin down where you're getting less speed than the rest of us, first run the ftp speed test directly connected to the SB4100 if possible. If speeds are faster, try hard wired to the router. If speeds aren't faster, call your friendly OOL tech support person.

I don't know what that first hop is. And the second one is the router with a 7ms RTT. Not good. Now hop #3 does not look like a default gateway. That should be a 10.X . So there is something screwy with that tracert.

Also, he did one a few pages pack with the same results.

Don't know what to make of that. I got 1.03 MB a few minutes ago when I grabbed that file. Now it's a little lower but still a lot better than you or siik are seeing. I wonder if the reason could be as simple as a bunch of people downloading that file at the same time as a result of my post.

edit: Here's a real world test you can do to see what you're capable of getting a real file from a real server. Go to »www.corel.com/support/ftpsite/pu···ndex.htm, scroll down to the Portugese (Brazil) SP1 file...WP9SP1_BR.exe. Download that, or at least start the download, from the main server.

Corel maintains a big pipe to serve those patches. I get 1.03 MB/s downloading that file. It shows what OOL is capable of given an adequate feed from the rest of the Net.

But it's less effected by routes and devices outside the control of OOL. Everything you're seeing when pulling that file is something OOL is responsible for. You aren't going over 3rd party networks and onto a machine that might be under powered for the load it needs to sustain.

Forget about fabricated speed tests.

There are 2 tests that really matter in figuring out if you have a problem.

1 - The OOL Ftp test. That tests your connection without factoring in the "internet" in any way.

2 - Any large file from a fast FTP server outside of OOL - This does factor in OOL's backbone connection.

I suggest this file:
»ftp://ftp.aol.com/clients/aol80/comp01.000

If you get speeds over 700KB or so, then there's NOTHING at all to complain or worry about. That's the speed you are capable of getting. Why you score lower on some sort of java speed test, who really cares.
