clonehappy : Hi, Chris and welcome. According to the FCC's distance calculator, Naperville, IL (at 60540) is somewhere between 24-26 air miles to the broadcast towers in the Loop. I have a neighbor with HDTV who I have been helping increase his signals, as he isn't familiar with antenna setups. My location in Portage, IN is about 23-25 air miles from the towers and I have found the best way to increase signal is to use a small amplifier (I use Radioshack #15-1113B) combined with an antenna rotator. I have mine mounted on the rooftop, but do not see why it wouldn't work in an attic setup if there was enough clearance. The antenna rotator will let you remotely move your antenna to maximize your reception by aiming it directly at the source, which may vary from channel to channel. This may or may not solve your problems, being as the setup is in an attic and this poses other obstruction issues. I currently use the VU-110xr as well with no problems on analog broadcasts, but in your case perhaps moving up to a larger antenna such as a VU-190 can get around the attic obstruction. Please let us know here if you make any progress, as I am considering upgrading to HD in the near future and will probably encounter similar issues.
Hope that helps

clone

After a while I realized that there was much more HDTV programming Over The Air. According to my set top box operators manual, a signal strength of 60 or greater is an acceptable signal. Here's the curve, all channels but 2-1 and 5-1 are received at a greater signal strength but I still have problems receiving a consistent picture. The signals are in the 90's and up to 100, on a scale of 100, but they fluctuate. As they fluctuate, the picture suffers. Another twist, channel 5-1 which typically has a signal strength of 48 - 58 in steady and produces a the best picture. (2-1 ,CBS, I can forget on all but the best nights. But even then the signal is low and steady, and the picture is all but flawless.) I have added a pre-amp, but this has had no effect on increasing signal strength or consistency.
One other thing to note, channel 7-1 (ABC Super Bowl)appears to be broadcasting a signal that is cropped at the top and bottom of the screen.
I'm looking for some input to the above, and hoping for suggestions as to how I can improve my HDTV experience.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

P.S. Since almost all of the DTV channels around here are UHF you might want to just spring for a good "deep fringe" UHF bow-tie panel antenna. They are a lot smaller. You'll only be missing CBS.
