how will Covad contact me about the switch?

I don't think Covad can email me, after all my Flashcom email account is now dead (in fact I never and I mean never got any email on that account). They probably have no idea what my main email is. That leaves normal mail, which is costly and inefficient, so I doubt they'd do that; or, by phone, which will again be time-consuming.

I don't want to have to switch prematurely, but I also don't want to suddenly have my line go dead. What to do?

BTW, how is Speakeasy (which I probably will end up with once this all settles)? I just hope I get my static IP for a comparable monthly rate.

Well I just looked at the SafetyNet page and when I put in my name/zip code it came back saying that Covad has arranged for me to be transitioned to DSL.net. So I guess they don't have to contact me at all.

Time to start researching DSL.net I suppose..

I too am a Flashcom customer. But, in all honesty, a very satisfied and scared customer. I have had rock solid 1/2 T-1 speeds since day 1 with no known interuptions on my SDSL service since December. Northpoint was the "go between". I observed your mention of a "SafetyNet page" Where is it? I was wondering if i too will be sold off to another provider.. Thanks in advance for any help. John

go to www.covad.net and click on the SafetyNet option.

I called up dsl.net and found out for the same service I have/had with Flashcom (384 SDSL) it's $180/mo!! The guy was incredulous also that I really had an SDSL residential line, especially at $60/mo.

Speakeasy looks to be a lot cheaper, sort of, at $99/mo. Still more expensive than what I was paying though. I may just get that until I can get cable internet in a few months.

But I'm wondering what is going to happen if I just sit tight for a while. I mean I still have service at the moment, will it just turn off one day?

UPDATE!

Hmm, I guess they did have my email address on file. Here's the message I just received:

Dear Customer-

As you may know, Flashcom has recently filed for bankruptcy, and is in the process of working with vendors to transfer our DSL services. This email pertains to changes forthcoming with anyone who has signed up with Flashcom, and is using Covad as a DSL provider. If you are using a DSL provider other than Covad, please disregard this notice. If you are not sure who your DSL provider is, please click here: »start.flashcom.com/dslsearch.cgi

The attached Adobe Acrobat PDF file contains important instructions regarding the transition of your DSL line to a new Internet service provider. If you can not read the following attachment, please click here: »www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/r···ep2.html to download the Adobe Acrobat reader. After installation, this will enable you to read the attached PDF file.

If you have any further questions, please visit our website: »www.flashcom.com. Please do not reply to this message.

Thank you,
Flashcom
The pdf letter states that as of March 16, you need to be transitioned or you will lose your Covad line, i.e. Flashcom is switching off for good.

I spoke with two Flashcom people today (for validation, see). Flashcom is going away for good. As mentioned previously, March 16 is the turn off date for Covad. There are offers on the table for the RBOC customers (the only rats ... err customers left on the ship after the Covad deal) and this should be announced sometime this week. Likely everything will turn off in March at the same time.

For what it is worth, I have had rock solid service from them for almost two years now with really superb tech support. No downtime (except when my telco had equipment failure in their CO) and I'm sad to see them go.

you are a Northpoint customer rather than a Covad customer (of Flashcom). You need to contact Northpoint to make an ISP switch. The safety net is only for Covad.
