scryber join:2001-01-13 Rockville, MD | March 16 deadline for Flashcom/Covad transition I received an email from Flashcom about the transitioning of Covad customers. If you somehow didn't receive it, here are the basic details:
Beginning Feb 21 you'll be able to move to a new ISP. Flashcom will no longer be providing service as of March 16.
It goes on to mention the Covad SafetyNet. That's about it.
Three weeks left. Now the wild stampede to switch over begins. Oh joy. |

I have checked the Covad safety net for my service and it shows I don't exist.I guess I will wait until March 16 and see what happens. We all know how long it took for service to get installed between the telco and Covad and Flashcom. |

Anon | reply to scryber They say I dont exist either I checked with them, and I seem to be totally ignored... -- Humans don't cause Global Warming, Microsoft does. |
|
 | You think with almost 25,000 people, they'd have everyone of you in the system in 2 or 3 days? Just wait for your welcome kit in the mail...and if you wait until march 16, your line is dead and you'll have start all over. dsl companies may be slow to turn things on, but ask them to turn it off and there goes the switch. |
|
 | reply to scryber I haven't received e-mail or snail-mail info.
Does anybody know: If I choose not to transition over to a Covad-supplied ISP by March 16, will my contract with Flashcom become null and void?

scryber join:2001-01-13 Rockville, MD | reply to jjwagner Whether you've been billed or not, whether you are in the records or not, come March 16th Flashcom is shutting down the lines. At that time you can bet your connection will die too.
If you want to wait until the 16th to see it happen for yourself, just be ready to have to go through the whole installing process all over again. The announcements have clearly stated that if you don't find an ISP before then, "you will permanently lose your Covad line." That's straight from Covad and Flashcom. What makes you think that just because you are somehow not being billed by Flashcom that you will still magically have a connection when they shut down? I just don't see the logic there. |
|
 | The logic is this: I already had another DSL line installed as a safeguard. It was activated about 10 days ago. Now I want to get out of my Flashcom contract without penalty. Looks like my wish was granted. Come March 16 I'll be free.
BTW, my new DSL is through Telocity. I got 384/384 SDSL where I had 144/144 IDSL from Flashcom. Even saved a few bucks per month. So far, service has been good.

scryber join:2001-01-13 Rockville, MD | reply to jjwagner How much for 384 SDSL? |
|
 | reply to scryber yahoo... its my ticket out of Flashcom too!! and I was gonna be forced to cancel a week later anyways since I am moving.. haha!! If they had to go under, they sure picked the perfect timing!! |
|
 | reply to scryber Telocity's 384 SDSL is costing me $49 per month, with no contract. Flashcom's 144 IDSL was $55 per month on a 2-year contract. Both offers included free installation.

I am really interested in getting that 384/384 for a web server. |

That does sound great, but take a look at the DSLR reviews for both Speakeasy and Telocity. Speakeasy is second from the top while Telocity is down near the bottom. Complaints include poor latency and tech support problems.
If I didn't do online gaming I probably would give Telocity a shot. They are half the price of Speakeasy and who wouldn't want to save money? But after Flashcom I'm wary of super deals with suspect service. Not to say Telocity is bad, because I personally can't say. But I'm not going to risk going through that same situation again, it just sounds too familiar. |

I couldn't agree more. A thumbs up vote for you. |
|
 | reply to scryber I admit I was (am) nervous about Telocity and everything I'd read on these boards. However, I'm getting almost 3 times the speed for less cost AND THERE'S NO CONTRACT! This was enough for me to give it a try.
So far there have been no outages and pretty consistent speed. I've had some latency problems, but not too severe. (I'm not an online gamer, so maybe I don't notice it as much as some of you guys.) In a nutshell, I'm satisfied.

Are you with Covad, Northpoint or Rhythms? |

I was thinking of taking a chance with Telocity for those very reasons. Until I was informed by both Telocity and Earthlink that neither can offer me service because my CO is not capable of 1.5 downstream! So it's either 608k down with dsl or wait for cable. |
|
 | reply to n2jtx My Telocity service is through Northpoint.
jj
ps - yes, I'm aware that Northpoint went Chapter 11. |
|
 | reply to ron1501 384 SDSL was the best I could get because of distance from the CO. Still, it's better than 144 IDSL I had from Covad.
