I have nothing to add to this thread re: the issue. I do have to say Welcome back, emilioG!!! I just did a double take when I saw your name. How good to see you again. I do hope all is back to normal and we will see more of you, just as we used to. You have been missed.

I'll echo jkk's post. It's good to see your familiar moniker back on the boards. Hope all is well with you and hope to see more of your posts in the coming days. Welcome back friend!

It's happened again!

Joel,

Other postings are now starting to show up with the same problem -- and the same solution.

See the comp.security.firewalls thread entitled "Microsoft Outlook XP and Norton's Personal Firewall" started by Anita Gillard on or about 1738 ET on 22 Nov 2002.

Once again, it would be quite helpful if you now have any ideas as to how this happened.

Re: Norton Internet Security 2003 Not Allowing Ema

Maybe Randy, or Jazzman, or CrazyM could check their setups to see is this is some sort of new default setting in NIS/NPF 2003?
I echo CrazyM and Randy. 110 and 25 are not in the port list as the default. Have you installed any other packet filtering, ad blocking softweare that NIS would have for some crazy reason added those ports to the list?

Jazz,

I agree. Something is causing these additional ports to show up in that listing and it would be very nice to know what it is. (I've already asked Anita to post back if she has any ideas.)

Actually, I think I saw several postings prior to Joel's complaining about this problem elsewhere, but (not having NIS/NPF 2003) I was at a loss to answer them. So, yes, it would be invaluable to locate the source, because I think we're likely to see more queries about this in the future.

I am just grasping at straws, but maybe a free AV, spam scanner, P2P client, email program, AOL 8, MSN Explorer 8?

It would be nice to see what the user has installed/altered since the issue started that does any type of packet filtering.

Ahem!! (Where'd I put those soapboxes? I just had them here a minute ago? . . . Ahh! Found 'em!)

This is one of the reasons I'd like to see some timedate stamping of rules in the firewall ruleset and the capability to sort and filter rules (and then document, copy, paste them, etc.) This has never been available in NIS/NPF or even in AtGuard and I think it's functionality that's long overdue. For that matter, as things currently stand, Joel and Anita cannot even easily copy and paste the apps for which their respective firewalls have created rules. If they could, you, CrazyM, and Randy might be able to simply browse through the resulting list and say "Oh! I don't have that application installed!" and we might then be one very big step closer to finding the source of the problem. I figure, like you, that it's gotta be related to some installed app and that NIS/NPF 6 modifies the HTTP filter rules as consequence -- but I have absolutely no idea what app may be involved.

I recently upgraded from Norton Internet Security 2002 to 2003. I can now no longer send email from Outlook. It will not allow me to send even if I turn the "scan when sending email" option off. The only way to send email is to disable Norton and logoff/logon. Anyone have any ideas? Please help
First, did you uninstall NIS 2002 before installing NIS 2003? (If not, that may be part of your problem.) There's no automatic upgrade capability (yet), although Phillip Pi indicated in the USENET comp.security.firewalls newsgroup that it's coming via LiveUpdate (bit late, that, inasmuch as you would already have installed NIS 2003 without the upgrade functionality, at which point it wouldn't be worth much).
Hi, there is a small correction (misunderstanding). The upgrade and setting migration feature will not be added back via LiveUpdate. It is only available in Pro version and later versions of NIS and NPF (starting with v6.0.2.25 I believe). There is no way to upgrade the read-only CDs to make upgrade and setting migration features work.
