Basics of Comcast@Home?

I am going to place an order Comcast@Home this week. Do they use PPPOE, static IP, etc? Must I use their software to sign on, or is it static IP where I can just specify the settings in the Control Panel, and when I turn on the PC, I just open IE and go?

IP is DHCP. You don't need the software to connect. In fact, I'd recommend that you do not install the software.

ya they just caped MD, to 125k up , this sux cause I use to get 1500k up. down I get 3500k-4500k that has not changed but the cap adds alot of lag I use to be in the teens to 30's ms. now its over 250ms. but still its a way better deal then DSL.

BTW cables been around 1996 way before PPPOE was invented for DSL, and yes its static, just dont get the self intsall kit AND NEVER INSTALL THE @HOME SOFTWARE.

computer name is all you need to put in (maby some drivers for your nic too)

They use static IP although they prefer you use DHCP to obtain
all the information. No need to install any software.
No need to set your computer name to the one assigned to you
to obtain service.
If you look at the install sheet there's an IP assigned to you.

What I recommend doing is first use DHCP on your PC with the
assigned computer name (no need to set workgroup to @Home) to
obtain all the IP info with winipcfg or ipconfig, then write down :
- IP
- netmask
- gateway
- DNS servers

then just plug the above info into the PC and you ready to go.
No need to set the assigned computer name at all. Use anything
you like. And you are ready to run any IP apps.

Although if you are routed via the DC router you might encounter
a big problem the VA area has been having lately (started two months
ago) - high latency going through the "c1-pos9-2" router.
Internet is unusable. I hope @Home is working on this.
Let us know how it is in your area.
