Price increases

OK time to play devil's advocate here..

I keep hearing this "45%" increase mentioned.. By many people and in many articles, but have of yet to see any true numbers to back that statement up.

Anyone have any links to any un-biased reports proving the 45% increase?

Also, it is a fact that every year, the broadcasters who supply the channels to the MSO's also raise the rates charged to the MSO's. Why is that never given any press? I'd be curious just how big of an increase say ESPN hits the MSO's with every year.

well what was originally reported and what is repeatedly talked about in the press is the increase in CATV services.. that is VIDEO, not Internet.

The Internet is still new, the demand for connections faster than dialup is high. Any 1st year economics student can tell you that equates in higher prices.

HSI has been around to a mass market for years so its not that new. As for demand I won't disagree but its the lack of competition that allows this cable companies to charge the ludicrous rates they do. Wireless phone demand has been going at about the same rate as HSI yet their rates have continuously going down.

However, this is all moot as you were referring to the price of CATV and not HSI. My HSI had gone up 93% in 19 months, my CATV had gone up 45% in less than 9 before I dropped it. Although, this article may only focus on CATV, there are just as many that echo what I have shown and they do indeed reflect the true nature of what is going on in the cable industry both HSI and TV. Gouging and Profit taking are the motto of the day.

I agree. This is purely the fault of the telco's who I think instead of building out their network to bring DSL to more people, they sat on it and dragged their feet deploying to protect their high priced T1 data service.

The cable co's were smart enough to see a future in HSI and went for it, spent the money to bring the service to more people.

And now people want to vilify them for that?

What I do not understand is if there is such a desire from the masses to have CATV competition, why don't other companies come in and build their own systems to compete?

I suppose they just don't want to spend the money.

oh so you are completely anti-business? cause last time I checked, the goal of any business is to extract as much money from the masses for a product in order to make the most profit possible. hmmm don't they have classes on that in colleges? maybe even entire schools dedicated to teaching those principals. What's it called? Oh.. Capitalism
