 | Big Cable's Package-Pricing Ploy Beginning this past October 2002 the 1992 Cable Act says Cable Operators can no longer require cable viewers to by Multitier packages of programming.
What this means is you can pick and choose the channels you want. You can order just one HBO, Starz or Cinemax, order TechTV and get rid of the Soap Channel or any of the other channels you like and dont like. Paying for just what you WANT.
This is Cables worse Nightmare which they know will be getting out soon !
More details here, this is the REAL DEAL. http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2002/tc2002116_0167.htm |

| reply to Nitewind Yeah, but expect due to "loopholes" that the Ala carte prices will be much more then the packages.
Example: Buy the package deal for $50 a month ---or--- pick your own lineup.... at $3.00 per channel per month.
Guess what. Package deal. -- "When the day comes that anyone can bend our countrys laws and lawmakers to serve selfish, competitive ends, that day democratic government dies" -- Preston Tucker, 1948 (Yep, it's dead.) |

Quote: PICK AND CHOOSE. New York City fans of HBO's Sex & The City who couldn't care less about the 20 or more channels that must be bought to get that particular premium service could slash their monthly cable bill from $56 to about $31. The smaller fee would get HBO and the major TV networks. In Orlando, fans who want Showtime's The Chris Isaac Show but not the assorted channels that come with it, could cut their monthly cable costs from about $51 to just $29. |

 | reply to KrK One other point if this was such a GREAT DEAL for the CABLE Companies and knowing how much they love money why are they not advertising it ?
I mean they would not need to have more price increases never mind the bad press if they could make that money by selling channels seperately would they ?
Fact is they make there money off all the packages and this is going to HURT them and its here use it or not its your choice ~
Hmmmmm........ |

interesting.. around here that has been possible for some time.. it's called ala-carte
you want the 27 channel basic cable package and HBO and just HBO - you can get it. the only requirement our cable co has is for any VIDEO service you must have at least the basic antenna channel package, which is like $11 a month.
if other MSO's are forcing other channels/packages on those who want premiums - well that is just plain wrong IMO. |

smokeyjonLife Is Overrated join:2002-06-11 Germantown, MD | reply to Nitewind Does this apply strictly to premium channels? In other words, could one conceivably pay strictly for basic access, the converter rental, and pick and choose any other channels (such as History, Discovery, ESPN News, etc)? |
