demax4 join:2000-05-01 Fullerton, CA | Trade WinME for WinSE (or help on WinME please) WinMe drives me nuts. When open the explorer the dumb "My Documents" Folder opens up first all the time. I don't have any docs. I want it to open like Win98/SE simply showing the drives. One click instead of 3 clicks. What line in the Registry do I edit to get rid of that "My Music" "My Documents". OR PLEASE, I will TRADE my ME for your SE. |

icpms join:2000-12-10 Mountain View, CA | What you need to do is right click on the Explorer icon and select properties...in the target line add the switch /n,/e to the end. Start explorer and it should open you C drive instead of My documents...hope this helps. -- Tomorrow is here...the future is now... |

How to make Groovy Coasters First thanks icpms for your help, explorer now opens showing all the drives. Now to get rid of MyMusic & MyPicture is next. I like everything in assigned folders.
Great idea icarusflys, bird coasters. Now to make groovy ones just put them for a second into a Microwave oven. They turn into beautiful colors. Really hallucinating. Tie them on a string & they sparkle & make a great scarecrow.
Wait till WinXP comes out, you will have to subscribe to MS & update every so often, if you don't the proggy will stop running. How about trading Win2000 server for WinSE. I'm just don't like ME. And 2000 won't see my SCSI card. I'm not about to buy a new card. |

 | Ok, am I THE ONLY person that likes WinME?
or am I just too stupid to see all the grief it's supposed to be giving me? -- ...It's a little sketchy out there. |

Re: How to make Groovy Coasters I had tried ME with terrible results. It was the most unstable MS OS yet. Somehow I have managed to get a rock solid 98se install but when it goes south on me,and it will,Im going to Win2k,or XP if MS smartens up and drops the subscription idea. They are getting alot of bad press on that angle allready.Plus, somebody is going to crack it eventually and folks who are usually honest will turn to the crack to save themselves aggrivation.2 installs you get? I reformat so often Id go nuts having to call MS after the second one for a new key.Bad Idea!!! Bad bad bad ! Done ranting, time to go play with the microwave! -- There comes a time in every man's life and I've had plenty of them. Casey Stengel |

NYR 56Premium join:2000-12-05 Smithtown, NY | i love ME also. It is the fastest OS from MS, at least on my computer, and has gotten pretty stable considering it is from MS. It blows 98 away in speed from my experiences. -- "Keep honking, I'm reloading!" |

Never Thought of That Part. Reloading ! My God your right. I have loaded 95 at least 70 times. Win98 5 or 6 times until I got it rock solid. Never, Never crashed on me again. Then I load on a little test PC over dozens of times, I can just see calling MS in the middle of the night Long Distance at that, & without a OS the email won't work. ********I would still be using Win98 if the following hadn't occurred.******** WARNING WARNING ************ I transferred Win98 to drive F:\ formatted drive C:\ and loaded ME on C:\ so guess what. ME wiped out my Win98 it just wrote right over it on Drive F:\ I should have unplugged it or had a backup. I hate Microsoft. NERDS with NO common sense brains. They should be shot one at a time for every bug. That would straighten them out real fast. |

Tell that to Zdnet and other test centers. Speed wise your absolutely wrong. I did quite of bit of research before deciding to test it myself. Nowhere will it say that its faster, but just the opposite. It's a hog. It requires a lot more memory power. It requires more HD space. It runs more background applications. It requires a higher CPU usage & a faster CPU. It doesn't allow API functions. What about games ? Talk to the gamers 95 will blow away 98 and 98 will blow away ME. Go to the hackers sites and ask them what limits ME has imposed. If you got a secret you ought to share it with the rest of us. |

Re: Trade WinME for WinSE (or help on WinME please) I dunno, I've been very happy with WinME from day1. I've found a couple apps that don't know what to do with it and error out, but other than that... I can live without Imesh and rapigator, those are the only 2 that seem to not like ME that I've found. *shrug* I'm sure having an 850 with 640mb ram on that machine doesn't hurt either... -- ...It's a little sketchy out there. |

Re: Tell that to Zdnet and other test centers. ME IS FASTER FOR ME. I dont care what you say, or what tests you show me, it performs better on my computer. I went from 98 to ME to 98 to ME, and it does do better.
BTW, I have an AMD Athlon (enhanced) 256mb SDRAM... -- "Keep honking, I'm reloading!" |

 | ME definately seems to be kinda sketchy. Some hardware configs it loves, some it tolerates, and some it doesn't like at all. I've seen ME run perfectly on one machine, and error out/get BSOD constantly on another machine. *shrug* I guess I got lucky -- ...It's a little sketchy out there. |

... i use ME only for games whistler can't handle. otherwise, i am only on the NT platform. in short: ME sucks big time. it is slow, and often it would just refuse to boot up with some weird error. day or so later, it will be ok. so far, i have kept this install of me for almost 2 months without reinstalling. now that's a record. another thing.. if you use it for 8 or so hours, you have to reboot, or nothing works. explorer crashes often with 'illegal operation' error, and it takes 2 minutes to erase 4 MB of data from the 5200rpm drive! (yeah.. it takes 20 seconds for 2k to do the same task).
so if you have a good 98 setup, stay there. i personaly find nothing in ME that is worth upgrading to.
and as far as the subscription idea for XP, stick with 2k. XP is basically the same. and most people already bought all the extra software offered by XP (cd burners, firewalls, etc). anyway, i will not bother with it, until the subscription thing is history. for the record, i am currently using Whistler Beta 1. and i am happy with it. at least for the 3 months trial period -- Life is full of wonders, if you can find them. |

Re: Trade WinME for WinSE (or help on WinME please) I guess me and CircuitBreaker didn't have any problems with winMe. I'm running four seti computers, overclocked, with ME with no crashes or problems. I didn't do the upgrade setup, but rather did the fresh install setup on a freshly reformatted harddrive. Perhaps thats the best way to install WinME or any windows for that matter.

 | reply to demax4 I hate WinME, used it for a couple months, and had many problems with hardware and a few programs. When I use ME it makes me feel heavy and when i use Win98 SE I feel a light as a feather and when I use Windows 2000 and feel like a god. I'm waiting for Windows XP, hopefully it will be better the Windows 2000 Pro. |

demax4 join:2000-05-01 Fullerton, CA | reply to gmlasam Your right gmlasm, ME should'nd crash like I hear many say. I loaded it on a fresh HD and don't crash, problem thou was it wiped out my Win98 that I saved on Drive F:\ (by wiped out I mean it overwrote on it.) The real way to test ME's speed is hook up two ME & two 98 on a Network and compare. There you can really notice the difference in speed. With just one PC and a good CPU 600mhz and above you don't notice it as much on a single PC, unless you bench test both. SiSandraSoft and a few others will do bench testing. I guess if one has a bottle of wine or glass of beer one can't tell the difference. |
