Or! If you don't to take the approach on WAN/DHCP setup that I described just earlier just do this:

Turn the Computer OFF

Then plug the ethernet jack from the PS2 into on of the ports on the router.

Plug the ethernet cable from the DSL Modem to the Uplink Port on the router.

No go into the PS2. Under login for the ps2 type your username as yourscreenname@aol.com then type in the password.

This will also work.

so i just switched ISPs... i just cancelled my aol dsl account and should be getting SBC dsl in about 2 weeks..
at least, this time, its for sure going to work... a straight connection from the modem to the network adaptor... how easy is that?!...

anyways, i think aol dsl should seriously fix this problem asap or they are going to be losing customers like me...

i just want to thank everyone here for their support and responses to my posts...

as for those still attempting to set this up through AOL DSL... good luck and my suggestion would be to just switch ISPs to avoid headaches and frustration...

You have a Linksys Router as of now. It should support PPPoE. Turn off everything and Disconnect your setup for just a bit and connect your Modem to the WAN Port and your computer to port 1 and PS2 on port 2, okay?

Then turn everything on.


From there, set your computer's NIC to "Obtain IP address Automatically"

Restart if you need to.

Reset if necessary.

And what I want you to do from this stand point here is to configure the router to connect with your username (Screenname@aol.com) and password.

To do so, you must tinker with the settings with your browser. The common address for the router is »192.168.1.1

From there, follow through in setting up the router with PPPoE.

If it asks you for a password, leave the username blank and just type in admin in lower case letters in the password field if this is your first time setting it up.

Once the router connects online, your computer and the PS2 should be able to connect online.

Let me explain my situation:
I got XP, AOL DSL, ethernet modem, 2 NICS, crossover and ethernet cables, and WinGate.
I followed everything Joemontana instructed and got online but cannot be recognized by SCEA consumer services. I put in my NBA disk and got online and got that same message that the EA server is down. Howd you get past that? Was there any specific port settings that you inputted into WinGate? Ive been dying to play online. Maybe when we get this working we could challenge each other. (im really good)

However, after following the instructions at the outset of this thread, I wasn't able to connect. After beating my head against a wall, I decided to go to the wingate support page. There, in the system requirements, I found that wingate requires a second network card when using a broadband connection. I installed this 2nd network card with an internal address (192.168.0.1), and that solved my problems. I've been connecting PS2 through the NAT feature in wingate since, and living happily ever after.

all i did was download all board from the person who uploaded it and installed and put in this info that someone else posted these numbers will work for anyone

Just for your information I have been able to connect to the SOCOM servers and play with headset use after allowing TCP ports 10070-10080 and UDP ports 6000-6999 as were noted in an earlier post.

This configuration works as long as the Win2000Pro server is turned off, but I need it to work with the server on.
Winproxy is configured with mapped ports incoming TCP 10070-80, Incoming 6000-6999 UDP and the PS2 configured to 192.168.xxx.xxx to match my internal network. Also AS per Ositis (winproxy manufacturer) transparency is on, DHCP off.
I saw a post here from BB that he has Winproxy running OK. Maybe there is something I am missing.

When you call simple inform them that your AOL broadband doesn't work with PS2 and that you want this noted on your account and that you are considering switching. When you call simple inform them that your AOL broadband doesn’t work with PS2 and that you want this noted on your account and that you are considering switching. Changing always takes place on TCP/IP on your network card. Just double click on TCP/IP for your network and apply your IP.

I have the exact same connection as you (usb actiontec modem, win 98se, crossover cable) and I dont have that problem. However, I do have a problem with my comp freezing all the time. If you really want to try another program, try all aboard. Im attatching the program along with another very special file that allows you to keep the program forever since the company is out of business.

You need to do port forwarding. Ports 1791-1792 (TCP or UDP, I dont know) need to be forwarded. I think it's UDP, but try TCP too. Read the "News" at the Madden online screen. I was able to get on using Joe Montana's configuration. While playing Madden Online last night, I kept on disconnecting......more so than when i was using dial up. My connection showed 4 out of 5 green dots yet i still would disconnect. Am i conneting something wrong to where my connection would disconnect and reconnect so often. I really would like to play using broadband with out interuption..Please help me out in trying to reconfigure.

PPP Share does work to share AOL connections. Though I don't know about console setup.

Eventually these programs have to be bought. Winzip could only extract, even after trials are over. If you wanted to fully utilize it, it denies with its options darkened preventing from further usage except for extraction. They'll shutdown or block features.

Patrick, I dont know if you know this, but the SOCOM servers are really screwed up. I have LOTS of trouble just logging in during peak hours, and still have some trouble during other times. I get booted a lot as well. It's probably not your connection. JoeMontana's guide in this thread applies once the hardware is setup right. Just follow Joe's instructions after he talks about the NIC to hub hardware setup. If TCP/IP is not setup for the NIC, follow Joe's instructions on how to set it up. It took me 5 min to setup and it worked the first time I tried (I have a xover cable/usb modem setup). However, they are not the same as normal patch cables, or like others call them, "straight through cables." You Katz have a normal patch cable. The difference between the 2 is that they are wired a little diferently at the ends. Patch cables connect modems to PC's, PC's to hubs, stuff like that. Crossover cables hook up PC's to PC's, Hubs to hubs, things like that which is why they are sometimes reffered to as male to male connectors. They basically hook up 2 things that are the same.

If you buy Crossover cables at a store, make sure they are Category 5 or Cat 5e crossover cables. You might find Cat 6 crossover cables, Im not sure. They might work, but try to stay away from them if you can.

2) Log in by entering password.

3) On the left side of Gatekeeper, under System Services, double-click Extended Networking.

4) Go into the Port Security Tab.

5) Click Add

6)Under Protocol, check UDP. Make sure TCP is not checked. Enter 6000 to 6999 in the From Port option. Under Description, go ahead and type "Socom headsets."

7)Under "Action", make sure the Allow Packet radio is checked.

8)Under Options, click the "never timeout" radio. Click OK.

9)Click Add once again.

10)Under Protocol, check TCP. Make sure UDP is not checked. Enter 10070 to 10080 in the From Port option. Under Description, go ahead and type "SOCOM Game Data".

8)Under "Action", make sure the Allow Packet radio is checked.

9)Under Options, click the "never timeout" radio. Click OK.

Make sure to reset your AOL connection by exiting. Also reset Gatekeeper by clicking Go Offline. After both are disabled, go ahead and sign on to AOL, then click Go Online on Gatekeeper.

I recommend reseting SOCOM as well if it's on.

10) Find "PRpitohead" under users so he can kick your ass.

From what I've learned, there are 4 possibilities on why.

1) The max amount of ports that can be forwarded is about 240.

2) All Aboard needs to be configured to allow more than 240 ports to be forwarded.

3) The settings for AOL are not allowing me to forward more than 240 ports.

4) The settings for AOL are not allowing me to forward ports at all, even though AllAboard says I am.

How did I come to this conclusion you ask? Well, when I opened up ANY 237 ports, the internet worked. When I opened up ANY 243 ports, the internet didnt work. When I opened up any 240 ports, the internet worked except I noticed that pictures would not download right.

When the internet took me to the error screen, here's what it said:

"To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The mask determines what outside services can get to that port range, so no, blocking anything will just get you back to square one. Unless you know the sony server IPs, and you don't, then leave it open to everyone. It doesnt matter anyway. Coming back to the internet not working, I had to forward Ports 10070 and 10080 as well (the FAQ on SOCOM said I had to), and those are both TCP. Maybe that was the problem?

Hmm, yeah you must be. For a start, UDP has nothing to do with web browsing. You must be mapping TCP and UDP at the same time? second, the only important thing is incoming data, for that port range, and where to direct it, and that its udp.. if it was mapping tcp+udp, I guess it could break some incoming data, as your web browser will be getting data FROM port 80 but TO (whatever random port over 1024) .. although as I say, if the map is done JUST for udp, it is should not touch tcp traffic even if its partially braindead.

I've got AOL Broadband (Cable), and a Windows98se machine, with a Linksys befsr41 router.

I'm signing on just fine through the computer, and when I plug the PS2 in, the router picks it up when I try to access the network.

Only problem is that I don't think I'm actually accessing the internet through my PS2, using the PC as a host for ICS. Registration data is never sent, and I never get a server list when attempting to play Tribes.

I might be amiss in how I'm setting up my ISP configuration on the setup disk itself. The PS2 says I'm connecting fine, but that my registration data is not able to be sent. To me, this seems like a tipoff that I'm not actually connecting.

I am not using WindowsXP, so must I use WinGate? I had huge problems with Wingate, so I'd like to avoid it if plain windows ICS will work with 98se. After WinGate was installed, my AOL Cable could not connect. As soon as WinGate was uninstalled, everything reconnected fine.

Any thoughts on how to properly configure my ISP settings on the set up disk? I'm just shooting in the dark.

Also, is the something wrong with my hardware or software setup on the PC end?

Default Router Address: 192.168.244.129

DNS Secondary number: 192.168.244.129

Just make sure while installing All Aboard that you configure it to use the network adapter that goes to the PS2 (whether a NIC card or whatever).

Someone told me to check out a FAQ from some web site and here's what they said.

When I play SOCOM U.S. Navy Seals online, other players can hear me, but I can't hear them. What's wrong?
This happens only when the PS2 uses Network Address Translation to reach the Internet (either through a home router or via a PC which is using ICS).

In order for the voice audio headset to be able to hear other players when they speak, the router (or ICS) performing NAT must forward network packets which arrive on specific ports to the PS2. See the question above "What is 'NAT'?" to more fully understand how this works.

You either need to enable port forwarding for the required ports, or you can enable the "DMZ host" feature on your router. If you use the port forwarding feature, you need to know exactly which ports are required.

SOCOM requires that UDP ports 6000-6999 be forwarded to the IP address of the PS2 as well as TCP ports 10070 and 10080.

It is generally easier to simply configure your router's "DMZ host" feature.

Hey BBman, it's funny how I got the connection to work. I did everything the same, the settings you put up for AllAboard were already there, but the only difference was for the DNS numbers, I put the same number for both primary and secondary. Before I was just leaving the SEcondary DNS numbers all at 000.000.000.000 I dont know if that was the problem or not. All I know is that it works now.

Are everybody's headsets not working? I'm using All Aboard, not Wingate.

One more thing. BBman, the program All Aboard .... the company that made it is out of business, so is there a way to bypass registeration? Is there some kind of crack available? Thanx for all the help.

I am editing this response because I got the KeyGenerator that you posted last time with the All Aboard download. So never mind what I said above.

For the headset, you need to be able to receive incoming UDP packets, and they need to be routed to your PS2. Since wingate does not know where to send the UDP when it gets it, it is probably dropped. I don't know but perhaps wingate has an option to pump incoming UDP packets to your PS2 IP address, then you will hear people chat.

No its right. do you have another computer that you can test it on? double check this

go to start/programs/all aboard/server settings
and click "server parameters" tab
make sure these numbers are in there:
ip address:192.168.0.1 ---This has to be the same as your NIC
network adapter being used: (your network adapter not actiontek modem)
servers internal ip address:192.168.244.129
internal netmask: 255.255.255.128
enable dhcp
start addresses from: 192.168.244.149
name server: builtin

go to "internet connection" tab and enable "connect to internet using my lan connection" (this just means it wont try to dial a connection. it will connect using actiontec dsl modem)


go to "stop/start program: tab check "start all aboard server automatically during startup" and "apply"

IN PS2:
Set it to use network that is, when it asks you is you have an isp select "yes"(this means you want to use your internet enabled lan). Use manual configure and set IP 192.168.244.131, subnet 255.255.255.128, gateway 192.168.244.129, DNS 192.168.244.129 Save to memory card and its set
Let me know if you get socom to work so i can beat you!

1) Download All Aboard

2) Install it

3) I told the program that the computer was the base (not a client).

4) I clicked "Actiontec USB Modem" when it asked which network adapter I wanted to set up. The computer restarted and I was finished.

5) Manually set up the PS2 with the numbers you gave me, changing the IP address from xxx.xxx.xxx.129 to xxx.xxx.xxx.128.

That's ALL I did. Maybe you can tell me what i did wrong or what i didnt do.

is the page on the Wingate site that explains the install procedure for Windows XP. Before install it says that the "Advanced" tab checkbox needs to unchecked on the *internal* nic. On my XP box, the advanced tab says

[ ] Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the internet

and I expect that if this is checked, then Wingate will refuse to install or give an error.

winipcfg tells you your PC settings. Clearly do not set the PS2 to the same IP address as the PC.. either + or - one from the pc is fine.. ie if pc is 192.168.1.100 then make ps2 .101.. And you want to set the PS2 default gateway to be the PC!

network test actually does talk to the sony server, it basically looks up the iP and pings it, which tests DNS and basic connectivity. I Could'nt get wingate to load right so i used winproxy 4.0. this can be used as a NAT type server so no configurations of apps and games are necisary. Had to use manual config in ps2 setup. Autoconfigure doesnt work. we had all 3 online with socom at the same time untill 4:30 this morning IT WAS AWSOME!!!!!!

To make this short and sweet, according to Wingate Help Files this setup will work with a USB Connection from your DSL modem to your computer.

In the next few days I will re-release detailed walkthroughs on how to setup up this AOL/PS2/Wingate process with the following hardware configurations:

1. USB modem with one Network Interface Card and a crossover cable(NIC)
2. Ethernet modem, TWO Network Interface Cards, and a crossover cable (NIC)

This is very time consuming and proper wording is a must in this situation. So, please be patient because we will all see the online gaming promise land very soon.

P.S. I have no way of getting my hands on a XBOX, so I need one of you out there to verify for us if this setup up will work with the XBOX... I am 99.9% sure it will work with the XBOX...so someone try to get back to me as soon as you can on this situation. I really think it will work! THANKS!

What do you mean? I expect he figured it would work and tried it out. When I wrote a FAQ for SOCOM online I suggested AOL would work with windows ICS. As it turned out, windows ICS will not work with AOL, however the principle was sound, PC net share software should work, and thats that.

Well here's some some good news and some bad news for the New Year...

Good News:
The TWO NIC setup WORKS... I tried and it worked! I hope to have a lil' manual for you guys by tomorrow night to show you how to set it up.
Next, my cousin(jerk w/ XBOX)has been a Network Administrator for the last 15 years and he said my setup should work with ANY console that supports DHCP and DNS! He said I could get a toaster oven online if it supported DHCP and DNS. So, thats good news for those with the XBOX and the Gamecube. Hopefully, one of you will do us all a favor and give it a try!

Bad News:
It doesn't look like AOL is going to help us find an easier way to connect to our gaming consoles any time soon. I spoke to a knowledgeable AOL customer rep.(SHOCKING!) and she told me that AOL will not come out with some sort of fix until June, beta people will be the first to try it out, and there will definitely be a surcharge. I think AOL and all these other ISP's better remember what an INTERNET SERVICE provider is supposed to do.... PROVIDE INTERNET SERVICE!!! And not charge more, for something you are all ready paying for!

Whew...just had to let that out.

He may be right bombs. Crossover cables to behave in the same way as hubs do if you're simply networking two components together.

Hmmm, it's just a matter if the setup can listen and communicate/listen on the USB port

Try it panocha21, we won't know for sure unless someone takes a leap :) You seem ready to do so anyway :)

I'd recommend CAT5. Other cables would do fine like CAT3 and so on. But again, CAT5 is recommended. And yes you can use either a switch or hub. There's not much difference between a hub/switch. The only difference between them is how they handle communications between computers.

It couldn't be done with ICS or with just a main network setup. It was necessary to install allaboard or wingate to get such a console to work under AOL. It didn't work in my previous trials when I tired with just pure plain ICS/Network.

I do not have AOL CABLE... so I am assuming you could substitute the HUB for the ROUTER in my setup instructions. But then again, I assumed I could take the Kansas City Chiefs to the Super Bowl. (DUMB ME)

P.S. - Would one of you AOL Cable users try a 2 NIC setup instead of a Router/Hub configuration.

CABLE MODEM connected to NIC#1 ....
NIC#2 connected to PS2 via crossover cable.

HOW TO SETUP:
Press OK when you see the box above...leaving the username "Administrator" as is and the Password box blank.
The next screen you will see will be a warning message saying ""You have not specified a password
do you want to continue without a password?""
Click "OK"
The next screen that will pop up will be a box asking you to input a new password... make sure to enter something you wont forget!!
The password you just entered will be your ONLINE OPTIONS Login Password for the Wingate/Gatekeeper program.

So, everytime this box(above) pops up type in your password and your good to go.

Like many of you, I have been unable to access the online features of my PS2 due to the fact that I have AOL Plus and Win 2000/XP. Fortunately for us AOLer's, this no longer holds true, YOU CAN GO ONLINE WITH YOUR AOL BROADBAND CONNECTION!!! And best of all, you DO NOT need the Sony Network Adapter to get online with your console. (But, if you already forked out $40 bucks for the over-priced Sony Adapter, you’re still OK though...).

Well before we start, I want to clear up a few things for you Aoler’s who are new to networking and to those who are skeptical.

First, you cannot hook your modem or AOL’s router directly to the PS2 because in order for it to work the PS2 would have to have the AOL software installed on the console. And since we all know that AOL is NOT installed on the PS2…this would not be an option. So, since we have established that we cannot go online with our AOL connection and PS2 via direct hardware hookup I had to find a way for our computer to rout an internet connection to the PS2 while we are signed on.
As you all know, (or maybe don’t know) it is possible to go online with your PS2 using an AOL connection (any version) by activating Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on Windows 98/ME. Unfortunately, Windows XP's ICS does not work with AOL... maybe it has to do with that little disagreement AOL and Microsoft had months before XP was released... just my little observation. In conclusion, Microsoft screwed us... NOT AOL! Shocking Huh? Well anyways, ICS is pretty much just a NAT (Network Address Translation). So, I figured that all us AOLer's would need is a NAT program that works with Windows XP and AOL and we would be good to go. Well, after testing several NAT programs (and having my OS crash and 2 reformats), I finally found one that worked!!!

Its name, Wingate 5, TADA!

I have tried this program on my HP, Compaq, self-built computer and even my girlfriend's Dell Laptop and I have not encountered an OS conflict yet. In addition, it works with Zone Alarm. Nonetheless, if you installed WinXP on your Commodore 64 and it crashes and dies, don’t blame me... continue at your own risk!!
Of course, do not forget to create a restore point before installing this software just in case you do encounter a problem. So that being said lets continue...

OK LET’S START!!

Hardware requirements:
You cannot proceed unless you meet ALL of the following hardware requirements:

- (1) Ethernet DSL/CABLE Modem

- (1) Internal Ethernet Card (NIC)

- (3) CAT5 wires

- (1) 3 or more port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub w/ an UPLINK PORT!
(Recommended - Netgear 5 PORT 10/100 Fast Ethernet Hub/Switch - Model FS105)

- (1) Sony Network Adapter - OR - Linksys External USB Ethernet Card 10/100 TX

- Playstation 2

Software requirements:
- Windows XP

- AOL 6.0 w/RASPPPOE, or 7.0, or 8.0

- Wingate 5.0

Hardware Setup:

~ SET UP HARDWARE BEFORE YOU INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE !!! ~

Software Setup:

I. Install America Online software.

II. Install TCP/IP and Wingate
-Your Computer:
The following is a step-by-step tutorial on how to install TCP/IP and Wingate 5.01.
1. Verify configurations of TCP/IP
2. Configure the internal network adapter with a private IP address
(Note: A private IP address is suggested, such as 192.168.0.1)
3. Install WinGate
(Note: The WinGate file is typically called wgsetup.exe)

1. The first step is to configure the Network Interface Card (NIC) that is connected to your computer. If you have already added TCP/IP to the internal adapter, skip to Step 2:
Verify that TCP/IP is installed on the Network Interface Card (NIC) that connects to your internal network.
a. Under the default Start menu select Start, Control Panel, and double click on Network Connections. *note* if using the classic Start menu you will have to right click on My Network Places located on the desktop.
b. Right click Local Area Connection to open a drop down menu
c. Select the Properties option - This will open the properties for all adapters and protocols installed on this computer. If TCP/IP in NOT listed, proceed with the next step. If it is installed, you should move to step 3
d. Click Install to open a new Dialog box
e. Single click Protocol and click Add
f. Double click TCP/IP
g. Click OK
h. Close the Select Network Component Type Dialog box
i. Click OK - you will then have to reboot your computer

2. The next step is to configure the TCP/IP protocol on the Internal NIC. Under the default Start menu select Start, Control Panel, and double click on Network Connections. When using the classic Start menu you will have to right click on My Network Places located on the desktop, which was added in Step 2.
a. Right click Local Area Connection to open a drop down menu and select the Properties option.
b. Select the Advanced Tab and verify everything within this tab is unchecked.
c. Double click the TCP/IP protocol listed in the General Tab
d. Select use the following IP Address
e. Enter 192.168.0.1 for the IP Address, the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, leave the Default Gateway blank
f. All other settings (for both DNS and Advanced) should be left AS IS
g. Click OK until you leave the set-up screen - you will then have to reboot your computer

3. Install WinGate on your computer. You will need to choose the option for Configure this machine as a WinGate Server. While going through the install process make sure to only install the component called “ENS” this is the NAT component that will allow you connect your PS2 to the internet. Continue through the installation process entering your registration key when requested.

III. Setup PS2 Network Adapter or Game Software
- Make sure that DHCP and DNS options are set to automatic!

IV. POP IN YOUR FAVORITE PS2 GAME AND ENJOY!
