now that is probably the best use of this crappy modem, a flotation device
The X1 brick actually sinks, you can ballast your toilet tank with it.
I can not wait to drop my X1 in the toilet..:)

WARNING: Not recommended for toilets that are easily blocked by large, hard turds!

Anybody know how much the X1 and X2 gateways cost DTV/Hughes? Now they're no doubt a huge write-off. The Brick X1 model was better designed, more robust and more expensive to produce than the much cheaper "tower" model X2, which is why they tried to switch us all to the X2. It was a cheaper, less sophisticated product. And it floats.

Why don't we send one of each to Dave Letterman at NBC for the "Will It Float?" test. I bet he'd go for it.

If you sent it to NBC for Letterman, Jay Leno would probably get offended.

But he'd showcase it anyway.

I just took mine apart and did not find any flotation enhancement materials inside. Now I am double mad at Telocity because Doc Doo got a better model of useless gateway than I did. Do you think I voided the warranty when I opened it up?

BTW...It had a version of the Alcatel DynaMiTe chipset on the PC board inside and lots of other electronic looking things...none of which look like they would float. I guess the wall wart could be used to do something with. Perhaps a tiny anchor for the floating gateway.

Yank all the chips out of it to lower its specific gravity, and the Gateway's composition is similar to cat litter. It becomes very absorbent, and will then float. This refers of course to the X1 Brick. The X2 tower is more similar in composition to dog doo, and just fits snugly inside a pooper scooper.

I propose we take the guts out, then coordinate a mass mailing of the empty Gatway shells back to Hughes/DTV, all 170,000 of them on the same day. Surely they deserve this gesture as a token of our appreciation for cutting us off.

DirecTV started shipping out the newly manufactured X3 modem only weeks before they anouced their shutdown.

It is actually internally shielded, is much smaller and has a reset button.
