Re: OOL Raising Prices - $44.95 w/cable service

said by drewsclue72:
Just called Cablevision. The price increases go into effect January 7th. I guess its time to get that router since it will now be $44.95 for each additional modem also.

Any suggestions for routers?

It all depends on what modem u have. There is a slight speed issue w/ the linksys befsr41 router w/ the SB4200 modem.

Cablevision sucks... you guys should have seen this coming though.. prices for Cable TV went up, what makes you think they will actually not raise OOL rates?

Just because they said they wont raise their rates, does not mean they will hold true to their word.

If I were you, I would write a nasty letter to the local newspapers. Include quotes from Cablevisions press release stating that prices for OOL will not be going up, but then provide quotes from their website, showing the rates have gone up.

Although cablevision does not care about how they are perceived by the public, it will surely make them look bad.

Johnsp,

Sure prices always go up, but inflation now is what, like 2%?

We were at $29.95 about a year ago, that's a 33% increase in one year's time.
As if that wouldn't be bad enough.....but $29.95 to $44.95 is a 50% increase.

Maybe we can hit $49.99 by the end of this year..
You can probably count on it. And a price increase is certainly not one of those situations where you would say "I'd hit it."

Give Less - Take More

Cablevision's new advertising slogan:
"Give less - take more!"

We now give you less access to the Internet than ever due to our exclusive automated capping system. In addition we've now raised Internet access rates up to 66% for our video subscribers three times in the last calendar year alone!

What will we think of next?

Re: OOL Raising Prices - $44.95 w/cable service

I'll tell you what... With cable increases across the country being out of line with inflation, as well as the fact that not much has changed in regards to satellite pricing (which makes one wonder about the cable companies excuses higher prices charged for programming), the cable companies are lining themselves up for much stricter regulation..

Do they not realize that they could end up losing a lot of customers like this? People are not going to stand for this type of crap.
even if they lose a lot its not enough for them to lose money over all. i'm sure cv does the research befor a price change to make sure they will come out on top.

I had IDSL (144 up/down) for a year and change before OOL came to Hawthorne. I was paying $100 a month for that. I won't be going back to IDSL. Living in a 2 family house, I wasn't sure about getting a dish. Looks like my Landlord and I will be splitting a DirecTV bill and they'll get their Yankees

I can't justify keeping IOTV for about $85 a month when DirecTV is so much less and offers more or even the same. Especially since my raise this year wasn't even a cost of living raise.

The pricing is very confusing.
I just checked with the website and the following is copied. It indicates my charges will rise from $34.95pm to $39.95 pm and NOT higher as I have the Family Cable service.

Quote
or stop by your local THE WIZ location for a free demo.

Optimum Online is high-speed Internet access through your cable TV line and is up to 100 times faster than your dial-up. Since it uses your cable TV line, your phone is left free for phone calls. Plus, Optimum Online works great with AOL. The standard Optimum Online rate is $49.95 per month but Cablevision customers can save up to $10 per month. Look below to see how your Optimum Online monthly rates decrease based on your level of cable TV service.

Existing Cablevision customers can order a self-installation kit including a cable modem, cable, splitter and instruction manual online at www.optimumonline.com.

Cable TV
Service Level Optimum Online
Monthly Rates
Broadcast Basic $ 49.95
Family Cable $ 39.95
Family Cable plus any extra service $ 39.95
Any iO or OptimumTV package (see note 2) $ 39.95
Additional computers each $ 39.95

Go to this lonk and put in my area code : "07940" and it clearly says OOL is $39.95 for me.
Surely surely surely Cablkevision are not "baiting and hooking" new subcribers on a Family package + OOL and going to "UP" their prices IMMEDIATELY.

Me I am still paying $34.95 and expecting the jump to $39.95 surely they won't jump it again to $44.95 within a day?? i.e. 2 increases for me within one month?
Their website is clear at $39.95 for my area.

Are you guys talking about this page - »www.cablevision.com/customer/pro···net.html

Seems the person that updated the page missed a reference to $39.95 (near the top) but the table below it says $44.95.

WOW !!!

Weren't additional computers like $19.99 ???

And that is the reason why, contrary to the OOL lawyers prowling around here, they WILL start cracking down on routers. They're going to want to squeeze every dime they can out of you. It WILL become a one modem one computer system sooner or later.

You folks still have it good!!!

Let's compare, shall we?

Here are some of the tri-state area's cable company's Internet offerings.

Cablevision’s Optimum Online
Price: $45 a month, including free use of a modem for while you have the service.
Speed: Maximum speeds are 10mbit/1mbit.
Newsgroups: Unlimited. Bandwidth cap from news servers is 1.5mbit with a maximum of two streams (total bandwidth cap of 3mbit)
Mail: 20MB e-mail file attachment restriction (outgoing)/mailbox size
Web space: None offered.

RCN
Price: $40 a month
Speed: 1,500/800.
Newsgroups: Unlimited
Mail: 10MB e-mail file attachment (incoming)
Web space: 10 MB, support for CGI and PERL

Time Warner’s Roadrunner service
Price: $45 a month.
Speed: 2,000/384.
Newsgroups: Unlimited
Mail: 20 MB e-mail file attachment restriction/mailbox size
Web space: 5MB, support for Front Page extensions

Comcast High Speed Internet
Price: $45/month (including modem rental of $5/month).
Speed: 1500/128k
Newsgroups: 1 GB limit per month
Mail: 10 MB (including file attachments)
Web space: 25 MB shared between 6 accounts (1 primary 5 sub).

Comcast HSI Pro:
Price: $95/month (includes modem)
Speed: 3500/384k
IP: 5 dynamic IP addresses with a 6 month lease life
Everything else the same as Comcast HSI above.

You folks still have it good, so I don't understand why you are complaining. Those going to DSL will be very unhappy once they see what kind of download speeds they are getting. Only advantage DSL has over cable is the ability to run servers.

Re: OOL Raising Prices - $44.95 w/cable service

I guess my timing was pretty good. I dumped their shitty TV service just in time and got the Dish. I don't feel so bad now that I'm paying 49.95/month for OOL. Only a $5 difference is not too bad. I just have a feeling though that it won't stay that way for long. There are going to be plenty of people screaming about this increase. CV are out of their minds with this one, holy shit. Now there is almost no excuse not to go with satellite TV. I also started OOL at $29.95/month less than 2 years ago. How can they justify all these increases? What are we getting for the extra $$$$?
