And with DSL how much more a month is it for each modem to the house?

DSL doesn't work that way. You have a single modem and then you get yourself a router and use NAT. That's what I do with Comcast, especially since they are OK with us using routers and is even offering a home networking option with a wireless router in some test markets.

They removed the 1.5 mbit download per stream with a max of two streams? When did that happen?

Re: OOL Raising Prices - $44.95 w/cable service

Interesting - I'm only paying $34.95 in NJ and not under contract to my knowledge! That means it's a $10 - 30% increase!!!! RIDICULOUS!

And no notice given to any customers -just watch it show up on your next bill......

Just thought I'd share this.

I live in New York's "Hudson Valley".
Our cable supplier became Cablevision when they bought/swapped some territories with AT&T - about 2 1/2 years ago.
Cable prices went up. Picture quality, which was fair at best, got worse.
I switched to DirecTV 2 years ago, when I got my widescreen TV. Could not believe the difference in signal quality.

I got DSL as soon (actually a little before) Frontier (local LEC) started offering it publicly. It has been solid - very few problems. There was no cable internet service available.

Within the last couple of months they've started rolling out/offering OOL here. I got a marketing call from CV - some idiot at a marketing service company. "No thanks, I'm very happy with my DSL!". She started to argue with me...how much faster and cheaper OOL is, blah blah blah. "I said: No thanks. And I meant it. I'm not interested, please make sure no one calls me again!!" The next sound she heard was that of the disconnect.

If you have no other option for Broadband - my condolences.
If you can get DSL from Verizon, Frontier, whomever - DO IT!
And switch to DirecTV - besides the digital quality picture and sound, you'll be able to get the Yankees. The only thing these companies understand is when they get hit in the "revenue stream" - aka the pocketbook. "HIT EM HARD", I say!

We made the front page of DSL Reports. As far as routers would they be able to detect if you were using one?

Well, I tell ya, I went to DirecTV way before OOL was even available in my area. I just hated their cable service and their attitude.

I went to Radio Shack, bought the entire DirecTV system for under $100 (Today it is $25) and went home, opened my toolbox and compass and installed it myself (even though DirecTV would have done it for free within a week) in under 20 minutes.

Plugged in the hardware and called up DirecTV's 800 number and picked out a package and while they were talking to me on the phone, BLINK, service came on. Total time: 30 minutes.

Once I saw the picture and the channels, I knew I would never ever ever go back to cable.

My neighbor just got IO, and I had to check it out to see if it compared; NOT EVEN CLOSE!

I will never understand why anyone would keep CV for their TV. Unless your landlord or property will not allow you to install the dish, it is downright foolish.

You pay less, get more with DTV.

As far as the OOL increase goes, I am stuck, no alternative, no DSL nuthin. I did use the DirecPC dish, it was great compared to dialup, but ping rates (lag) was lousy due to the fact it takes 1/2 a sec for a transmission to make it from your machine to the satellite and another 1/2 sec for your request to come back.

So, yes, I will keep OOL. The very minute there is DSL, I will most likely leave. I already have my name on several DSL mailing lists for when they become available in my area.

I also do not see why anyone is surprised or shocked. CV has been doing this for years, that is why their numbers are in the tank. Tigers can't change their stripes I guess.

Re: routers

No, CV cannot detect a router directly unless it's configured poorly (remote admin). They may be able to draw conclusions based on an analysis of your traffic though.

The minute they start looking at what we're doing at that level is the time to be very afraid.

When it was $39.95 with cable TV it kept me from getting DirecTV ,
now this obstacle has been removed.

Looking forward to paying $49.95 for OOL. Thats all CV will get from me.

Did I make a mistake? I had DSL service with Earthlink that I never had any major problem with except on 9/11. The service I had was 1500 down and 384 up for 50 bux a month. My actual speeds were 1301 up and 325 down. I was so happy when OOL was finally available in my area at the end of October. I signed up to ool and cancelled DSL. Now that I have the speed, I don't do anything more with it and the prices are close to the same. With DSL, I never had to worry about getting capped.

I will start pricing DirecTV or Dish and verizon DSL via veriations package.

I knew it was only a matter of time. Expect Opt On-Line to have another price increase shortly after. All of that bandwidth is not going to stay at that price for long. Cablevision isn't stupid.

You know its times like this when I really wish I could go back to Compuserve in 1984 along with my average $150-$200 bills for 300 baud access...

Edit: Adjusted for inflation that would be roughly $250-$350 Hehe

$29.95 first 6 months. $49.95 after that. You do get the first month free but in the end sadly seems OOL is the better deal at this point.

With Verizons veriations its about $30/mo forever. I already have long distance and local calling, might as well add DSL.
