Re: OOL price went up???

What a joke. The day I got capped they raise prices. Lets do a quick comparison...

OOL $44.95.
Great download speeds.
Can be capped (doesn't take much...found out that today).
News servers suck. 3 Day retention for text newsgroups too, ever try to follow a thread like that?
Email servers are a joke.
They limit and monitor your usuage.
Add about 20-30 bucks if you opt for a different news server, email, and web hosting.
Total about $65 - $75 if you opt for other services that OOL can not provide well.

Verizon online $79.95 for 1.5/384 business plan.
Great news and mail, no need to get it with a different provider. Web hosting and if you have your own domain name they will set it up for your Verizon account with no monthly charge so you can use their webhosting and email servers with your DSL account.

Someone tell me again why OOL is so great besides the download speeds for speed test?

It used to be the upload speeds, now that gets taking away if u use it too much.
CV is losing their A+ reputation really fast now.
P.C. Magazine, do another test, I would love to see the results now.

Motaboy,

Most people don't pay for any extra services, so it's still $35 less than the Verizon business plan.

As far as 3 day retention, the retention on text groups is way longer that that. Binaries are around 3 days though.

Bottom line is that, for most people is that:
1) OOL is still a good value (the best?) compared to what else is out there.
or
2) OOL is the only choice

Yes, it's frustrating, but that's why they are raising the price, because they can and we still have no where else to go that's better.

Text groups are only retained for 3 days. If my modem is not bricked yet I will hook it back up, take a pic, and show you. I know the text groups use to have a longer retention but over the last week or so it went down to 3 days.

Mota, don't bother, not that I don't believe you.
Maybe something went wrong and they lost some history recently. Why don't you see how it is a week or two from now and see if the retention is back.

Anyhow, doesn't really matter for purposes of this thread.

And sometimes, companies have no competition because of unfair business practices. I can’t wait to see what Cablevision has in store for competing VoIP services…

Sorry to late It's not that something went wrong and they lost some history. It's been 3 days starting from a week or so ago.

In response to the newserver, if your patient, you can send an email to the good people at »news.cis.dfn.de. They'll set you up with a text group account, with around two or so month retention for free. Just thought I'd let ya know.

People who were "talked into" OOL (like my mom) really won't understand 3 rate hikes in a year. At the margins I think some people will start making the choice to go back to dial-up for fear that this service is heading to 100$ a month in a fairly short period of time.

OOL is reaching a point where it would make sense to have a DSL line. I think the bitching, capping, whining from OOL about users using their bandwidth is going to get tiresome very fast. I know people want the ability to smoke their connection and never have to worry if you feel like running WINMX 24 hours a day like you can with dialup or DSL. No one gives a crap about the technical problems or DOCSISXYZ or other people on their node or any of that. MAYBE if CV/Lightpath were to hold the line on price people will be willing to accept all kinds of limitations but when the monthly fee is skyrocketing no one wants to hear about limitations on the service.

Is Verizon really that great? From what I've heard and read it stinks. Now, I have AT&T DSL at work. $99 and all I get is 144/144 thats 18KBS. That stinks but my bos does not really understand. Just got it and my boss said if it doesn't prove itself within the 30 day trial period, out the door it goes. Anyway, do you think the price of BOOL will increase also? I'm trying to convince my boss to maybe try BOOL.

Verizon, believe it or not, is very damn good. I also personally don't prefer using their services, but my DSL signal is only available through them. I currently have Earthlink DSL provisioned by Verizon, and it's fantastic. Uptime is about %99. I've had it about 6 months, and it's only been down less than a day.

The problem is DSL is easily broken/impaired due to physical conditions. Then you also have CLECs who don't get along with Verizon very well.

Basically, if your DSL is being handled by Verizon, it's quite good. If you're getting your DSL through a CLEC such as Covad, who's equipment is in a Verizon central office, things might not go so smoothly.

I had DSL with Covad as the CLEC, and it was very reliable. Much more reliable than OOL, in fact. And faster than the equivalent Verizon products.

As most of us who work at PC Magazine also live in the tri-state region, I too see the OOL deal as a real pain. Actually, the test results we post are based on consumer report cards through our web site: www.pamag.com. Feel free to write to us there, or watch the site for new surveys. If enough fed up people make their statement known, then our rating will reflect it.

In the meantime, I tried to get DSL but was too far from the CLEC. The box is even on the side of my house. A useless commodity in an age where Verizon doesn't want to spend the money to go fiber.

Give it another 10 years folks, it will get better.

In 10 years it will not make a bit of difference. Technology will march on and those that that do not keep up will be history. Also, CV, et al, as we know them today, will not exist.
