Re: OOL Raising Prices - $44.95 w/cable service

I wish a DSL outfit (anything but Verizon) sees this and offers OOL users a special package. Doesn't CV always do this? Optimum TV was the same a few years ago. Great deal for a year or two then $5 increases every 6 months.

I gotta find a cheap DSL that doesn't use PPoE like Verizon, I hated that extra software layer.

Verizon has come a long way since they started DSL. The extra layer does not affect your speeds at all since Verizon sets their speeds a bit higher than advertised so you can get closer to the advertised speeds. Quick speed test my verizon plan.

Your download speed : 1439279 bps, or 1439 kbps.
A 175.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 374485 bps, or 374 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

and that is with a 12/KB sec downloading going to on IRC from a OOL user...someone who should be capped but people who do legitimate work get capped.

No need to install a PPPoE layer if you get a router that has PPPoE protocol built-in (SMC7004ABR, etc.)

I'd seriously consider going over to DSL now myself, but I'm not close enough to a DSLAM to get decent speeds, so I'm stuck with OOL until SNET upgrades their service with a remote DSLAM in my area (not too likely at this point in time)...

Just called Cablevision. The price increases go into effect January 7th. I guess its time to get that router since it will now be $44.95 for each additional modem also.

Any suggestions for routers?

It all depends on what modem u have. There is a slight speed issue w/ the linksys befsr41 router w/ the SB4200 modem.
