| Nevada Bell Latency Problem since March 2 Just talked to ASI, they said to send traceroutes to support@nvbell.net. A widespread problem, even on ASI's T-1; not just a DSL problem. From the limited amount of info they get from NVBell, they said the problem is in Richardson, Texas, though my Line Quality tests (Example »/quality/nil/346050 ) show differently. They also say that Prodigy is intergrating their network with NVBell and that appears to be the hang-up. Hope this helps anyone. [text was edited by author 2001-03-07 18:31:15] |

 | Reno, NV... Richardson, TX... Where's the connection? Could you tell us a little more about the problem you are experiencing... |

3rd party ASI mentioned Richardson, Texas. Maybe that's where Prodigy is located?
Problem: check my LQ test posted previously. Speeds test at various sites (DSLR, MSN, speedtest.net all show 25-50% of what I used to get). I used to be around 630 consistently throughout February. As of March 1 or 2 things changed. See this thread in the PacBell forum for other speed and LQ reports from Carson City: »Slow DSL, what's up with PacBell?? |

 | Link in your previous post returns an error msg...
You are saying there's a problem using results of your speed tests, right?
Have you tried building a graph similar to the one in LSAN03 thread? |

Anon | reply to MyTechLife And If you are interested (I live about 30 miles from Ned). Here are a few of mine.
This is today : »/quality/nil/345859
This is yesterday : »/quality/nil/345396
I have done several LQ tests, and these are the worse of them from today (so far) and yesterday. But they are not that far off from the best. When there is packet loss, it is rarely less than 7% and up to 39% (yesterday).
Currently #11 in queue for another LQ test. WIll post when that it done. |

Anon | reply to MyTechLife Ok...here is my latest one http://www.dslreports.com/quality/nil/346345
BTW This one was done at 4:24:31 (EST) this morning http://www.dslreports.com/quality/nil/345613 This one had me excited, but that was short lived.
The 100% loss at my address was, I think, about the time I got disconnected (forgot to set any "Keep Alive" type options ). |

| Can't get quede up for a LQ test tonight, but speed test now shows I am uploading faster than downloading: 80/102.
One good thing about the slowdown: I haven't had to resort to dial-up tonight, like I have for the past month. Probably because nearly everyone else is getting fed up with surfing at subpar speeds - now there's just enough bandwidth for me tonight to keep my PPPoE connection alive.
Waiting................................ |
|
 | Ok, fellas... If you'd like me to take a look at your accounts send me your DSL phone numbers or your nvbell e-mail addresses. |

Sure - do you want my current IP address and list of open ports too?
ASI says that NVBell knows about the problem. Meanwhile, we wait - just like the people on LSAN03 wait.... |
|
 | Is your account static? Anyway send me your current IP. |

 | reply to MyTechLife This must be the same problem I am having in Northern OKlahoma. Started about 3 days ago! |

| Mudflas: What brings y'all to the Nevada Bell forum? Had to reply - my wife's family lives in Sulphur, OK. I hope they figure these slowdowns out quick, 'cause @Home cable internet is about to launch in my area of Reno. My mom has had it in her area of town for about a year and loves it. I may bail to cable. |

Anon | reply to MyTechLife mudflas...the problem is in more than a few places. Check out the pacbell forum. Mnay problem been going on in the Los Angeles area. And for many of them, its been going on for at least 3 months!.
For Ned and I, its only been about a week. I have talked to several other DSL users in the area and they are having the same problem we are, so its not an isolated thing.
Ned, you are lucky. @home is not talking about when they are going to be in carson. I know there are some people in carson that have it though. Guess it helps to know someone.
ASI closed my trouble ticket. That does not inspire confidence. At least I think it was ASI I dunno, I have called so many damn numbers over the last few days, having trouble keeping track of who is who.
Sent traceroute tests to support@nvbell.net. Hell, I've sent them to several people.
I hope this gets fixed soon...I have little patience and no other alternative other than SLOW dialup.
Perfecto Stranger : A name like Perfecto Stranger does not exactly inspire confidence. My phone number? You first. |

| 10pm 3/8 packet loss report: »/quality/nil/347726
It seems that our problem always begins at sbc-reno.10meg.ipcc.wcg.net
Code_Monk, ASI probably closed your trouble ticket (as they did mine), because it's an ISP problem (PBI/NBI). ASI quote; "It's not your DSL service".
My "inside" at @home is about a week ago at a major intersection near my house I saw some guys finally hooking up a fiber-optic cable to the @Home utility box. I stopped by and asked a few questions and found out it was AT&T@Home, they were nearly complete hooking up the neighborhood, and that AT&T should be able to begin selling service within a month. This was a few days before the Charter Communications buyout was announced. I've placed an inquiry with someone I know at AT&T whether or not @Home will stop selling and let Charter take over that task later in the year when they take over, or if it's business as usual until the take-over. I hope it's the later. My insider has yet to respond - he probably doesn't know yet. Will let you know if I find out............... |

I have had worse packet loss, but I know you have too. I have noticed, the last few days, when I first get up in the morning, I have done tests, Around 6 am my speeds are fine (just got 1131/106), but that if short lived it seems. Not sure at what time of day it craps out.
I have menitoned that server to various support people, and they pretty much did not listen.
Would very much like to know when @home is comeing to carson.
Thanks |

| Fixed ??? This afternoon's Line Quality Test from 5pm: »/quality/nil/348602
not perfect, but a heck of a lot better than it has been. It's now 8pm and speed test shows 620 down (during peak hours mind you)- my alltime best is around 645.
In fact for the past month my DSL has not even worked during peak time (6pm-9pm ish) - I had to resort to dial-up.
Hopefully this is really fixed. Even the newsgroups seem speedier tonight.
Is it just me? |
|
Anon | Well here is mine from earlier today about 7 pm.
http://www.dslreports.com/quality/nil/348695
There is still soem packet loss, but nothing like it was before and there is still some latency, particularly from sbc-reno.10meg.ipcc.wcg.net, but it is better.
nvbell called my house this morning and told my wife (I was at work and she was home for the day) that they were aware of the problem and were working on it and were sorry for the inconvience. |

It looks like there is still a problem at rback1-fe2-1.renocs.nvbell.net - especially from the east coast. Look at the worst - that's awful. Looks like yours from last night showed similar results from the east coast too.
Speed test this morning (non-peak hours) was practically the same as last night.
We're not 100%, but getting close. Looks like they've been working on it at least, and their not telling us to re-install Windows because it's OUR problem! |

Re: Nevada Bell Latency Problem since March 2 For the record, a router is down (according to SBC, the NV Bell office, and the local ASI folk)
