Can I have a wireless network with BellSouth DSL?

I was at Best Buy this morning looking at wireless routers and the Best Buy salesperson I was talking to told me that it is impossible to have a wireless network if you use BellSouth as a DSL provider. He said that when BellSouth rolls your IP, then your router must be reset. Is this true? And even if it is, it doesn't sound "impossible"

Right now, I have an Alcatel SpeedTouch Home modem that I have connected directly to my PC. In order for me to "get-online" I still have to login using BellSouth's EnterNet 300 software, is this normal? Or is there a way to have an "always on" connection.

Any help would be appreciated. I am still pretty new at networking.

Thanks,
-Clay

I've never heard of a provider "blocking" a router on their service. What the router does is acts as a computer connected to your service networked to the rest... so your provider would have no idea if it was a router or a single computer.

A simple question is, have you ever been surfing on your computer and had to re-connect or re-start to connect after an IP change? If not, he lied. Buy yourself a router, everyone does it.

God, I sound like a drug dealer

Not to impugn the reputations of all Best Buy computer "associates", but the majority I have spoken to literally have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to networking, and in some cases, basic PC setup and troubleshooting...........but they sure do love those extended service plans . If your SW Bell DSL is PPPoE, which I would assume it is since you are (unfortunately) using EnterNet to connect, the vast majority of home-use routers will be fine. All you need to do is enter your login information in the router's setup (user/password) and you will be good to go. In the event that you lose your IP address from SWBEll, the router will automatically attempt to re-connect (with no need to "dial-in" with EnterNet) without you needing to do a thing. This gives you the impression of an "always-on" connection, although the router itself may be re-connecting periodically.

I have a BELLSOUTH Westell modem, and a NET GEAR MR314 wireless router. I can NOT get it to work. I just signed up for Bellsouth DSL with no choice because Telocity/DirectInternetTV is closing shop. I was using this router with them NO PROBLEMS. Now it wont work. Bellsouth says that there Westell modem is a PPOE, I switched it to a Bridge, and changed the Netgear to a PPOE, BUT I STILL CANT get it to work.

FRUSTRATED PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

I had an Alcatel modem with Bellsouth ADSL and a wireless network with no problems. Also installed a WLAN for a client just like your setup.

You shouldnt have a problem, or at least a problem that cant be fixed by posting here!

Reelman, look at this

Not True...I am currently a BSFA user and I have a Wireless Network and have had for well over a year with no problems..

Again, he didn't tell you the truth... Enable8 See Profile said it best...The Router uses PPPoE to consistently check if the session has been dropped and will pick up the new one with no problem...

Re: Can I have a wireless network with BellSouth D

Been running NetGear MR314 wireless router over a year with BellSouth DSL and No problems... If connection breaks for whatever reason, Router does a PPOE logon and restablishes connection w/o any intervention on my part.... just like LBB says above..

Using the Alcatel STH modem hooked directly to router.. No need to install the BS Enternet Software.

Re: Can I have a wireless network with BellSouth DSL?

I was a directv customer as well. I loved it! I never knew how much value I was getting until their service was gone.

I am a Bell customer now as well (no choice) with similar setup. The westell dsl modem actually handles your PPPoE for you. Your username and password are entered into the memory of the modem. It will log you in on demand. However, if you ever change your account password, you will have to change it in the modem as well. Setup your service with 1 computer connected to the westell. Once you get that straight, connect the router to the westell and configure the router to obtain IP & DNS dynamically. Do not use PPPoE on the router - it doesn't see any of that since it is handled on the modem. You will notice performance is slow. Also, I had trouble viewing some secure connections (hotmail). I worked with netgear. We had to download the new firmware and tweak the MTU settings. However, I am still unable to view some websites. Anyone got an answer for that?

Bring back Directv DSL!!!!!

As pointed out above, it depends mostly on how your modem is set up. My only encounter with EnterNet (what a piece of crap!) was visiting at my sister's in Belgium, where her ISP is Skynet and she connects via an Alcatel SpeedTouch home modem. I just plugged my travel router (a linksys NR041 these days) into her modem, selected PPPoE, entered her Skynet login and password, and we were in business. Now, if the modem is configured to handle the PPPoE connection, that would not work of course, and I'm not sure what to do there. But if you have to run EnterNet, and manually start your connection via EnterNet, and the EnterNet configuration contains your login and password, it probably means that your modem is not doing this negotiation and so a simple router setup as above should work. The beauty of it is that you can then ignore EnterNet--no longer need it.
