kmoss join:2002-09-14 Lisle, IL | What's going on with our society? Rate hikes for cable tv and broadband internet? You must be joking. Last time I checked, the price of a new car goes up every year, the price of real estate goes up every year, the price of groceries go up every year, the price of everything goes up every year. All people do is complain about how unfair this is and how bad the merger is. People, go cry somewhere else. If you are too upset about your monthly bill going up $4, cancel your damn service. I don't want to hear this b.s. monopoly excuse either - nobody is holding a gun to your head. Nobody NEEDS broadband internet or cable tv (including telecommuters - get your employer to pay for it). Everybody acts like cable tv and broadband internet is the sole purpose of their existence. Get over it. Why not go enjoy the outdoors, or pay more attention to your family, or do whatever you think is more productive than bitch and moan about rate hikes and how unfair life is because your cable bill went up and there is nothing you can do.

The above statement is quite untrue. How many tech related items go down in price over a year? What about the stock market? And... While all the other statements may be true, your earning power usually doesn't go up comparatively. Then, the problem is that there is nothing we can do. We, as consumers, have let big corporations and government wrest the power from us. Our elected officials don't listen to us; because, they aren't here, they're busy filling their pockets with contributions.
Remember... He who has the most money, has the most power -- and we just don't have as much as they do. -- Keep it pithy, if you wish to opine.

You don't go to Best Buy and buy broadband internet - it's a service. Furthermore, it's a service that depends on people to maintain and operate. As with most other services, like natural gas or phone as comparative utility services, they go up in price. Lumping broadband into a "tech item" category is not a good comparison. You mention the stock market - yes, the market is down. But look at longer history - how is the stock market doing compared with 10, 15, or 20 years ago? My point exactly. My cable TV bill is going up about 7% where I live. This is the first increase I've seem in 3 years as a subscriber. Your salary hasn't gone up 7% in 3 years? Buddy, you need a new job.
| | | | | Re: What's going on with our society? Kmoss, companies love people like you! Since you don't mind paying any rate increase why not throw in another 20 bucks when you pay the bills?
Anyway, these rate increases are not justified! It's because of lack of competition or little competition which makes people angry.

What exactly is your point here? Your salary increase shouldn't go to simply keep up with your cable bill.
So...your cable goes up 7%...what about your other services that increase as well? -- =-There is no more nature....There is only technology-=

Where I live, the average household income is about $68k per year - the average salary increase for those households amounts to about $2,000 per year. My point??? A $50 annual increase in cable bills means is no reason to bitch and moan.
| | | | | | | Re: What's going on with our society? I think the point being made here is not so much the fact of an increase, but the amount. You stated your cable service has increased 7% in 3 years. The point made earlier: cable service has increased by SIXTY-SEVEN percent, this year alone, for starters, and secondly, there have been numerous changes in E-mail domains.
I recently moved to this area about 3 weeks ago, and was very disappointed that DSL was not available to me. Regardless, ATT Broadband was available, so I signed up. However, when I tried to set up my E-mail account, even though I, as a new subscriber, was given an ATTBI account (supposedly), I am on Comcast domains. Customer service definitely leaves a lot to be desired.
Personally, I don't like rate increases, especially in a market such as this. When one talks about "utility"-type companies, it is ALWAYS a monopoly, offered by the govt. These particular industries invest a huge amount of money on start-up, such as phone companies laying the wire and installing poles, cable, again laying the wires, blah blah blah. However, once these expenses are paid, a MAJORITY of the money they take in is profit. Anyone who thinks that price hikes are "justifiable" needs to look at a financial statement of one of these larger corporations, that have been around for a while, i.e. Comcast. It would be my guess that the NI will not be much less than 1/2 of the GI, if even that low. Just my two cents worth.

| | Yeah, Real Estate goes up every year. Wanna know how much Real Estate in California went up? Doubled, and even tripled in my area. Suddenly, $200,000 homes became $500,000 homes. Who cares if 'everything' goes up in price each year? The VOLUME of increase can make or break people's decision to buy. In this instance, 99% of those who live in Santa Rosa cannot afford to buy if they did not do so 4 years ago.
Being young I have no incredibly large bills to pay, so I could swing a higher broadband price. But MANY cannot justify the higher price.
