CAT6

I just received 200 ft of the new CAT6
Time to hook it up and see if there is a difference.
It is double the price of the original CAT5.
Anyone else have the CAT6? And do you notice any speeds difference?

No, I use shielded CAT 5 but my Cisco 2900 series switch has only (1) 24 port 10/100 blade. And for anything faster I have a Gig blade for FDDI. Since my longest cable run is 3 ft. I really don't have any problems.

The last post was for a smile

though I have no actual proof, I would tend to believe there is no difference using CAT6. Chances are the cable company's caps aren't even close to that of the 10mbs capacity of CAT5.

For the speed aficionado , fiber is just about as cheap as CAT 5 for short runs. No noise either.

The only time you would notice the difference between CAT3 (phone wire) and UTP (CAT4/CAT5) and STP (CAT5) is with distances of more than a few feet. You can actually get great performance from a 10 ft piece of CAT3 as long as you don't move it around much.

Why would YOU expect a speed increase by changing cable ?
Replacing your HUB with a SWITCH is a better deal.

cat3 can run at 10mb/s so even for long runs on a 10mb network things are good.

Please, CAT6 is a marketing scam. Are any of the RJ45 heads or jacks you using CAT6 rated. No. So what's the point.
And fiber. Yes, the price of fiber has come down, but check out the price of fiber optic based switches and network cards, probably 5 to 10 times more money then the copper version. Don't waste your money.
