MUST READ!! Eliminate that browsing slowdown...

Have you notice the slowdown during the last couple of days? Was there always a pause when going to ANY website? The culprit to this annoyance is the DNS server that EVERYBODY is using. 198.6.1.4 is what most people are using, so switching to 198.6.1.5 should make it go faster. HOWEVER, there is a way to go even faster than that!! If anyone is interested, please reply.

PING 198.6.1.4 = 98ms
PING 198.6.1.5 = 65ms
PING 198.6.1.X = 23ms

Go figure.

My Linux router has built in caching dns. Works great for me.

So how do you speed it up, Lex?

If you are using 198.6.1.4 , then switch your primary DNS server to 198.6.1.5 . I don't want to say this, but 198.6.1.X is even faster than 198.6.1.5 because no one is using it. NOW go figure.

As someone pointed out in another post, you can choose from cache01.ns.uu.net to cache08.ns.uu.net.
For me 02 and 08 work best.
Let's distribute the workload

Have you guys noticed that there are some urls that won't resolve? for example. www.newegg.com and www.msnbc.com using 198.6.1.5

It's probably timeout instead of not resolved...
Switch to other DNS servers!

198.6.100.6 works best for me. It is a dial-up cache (dialcache061.ns.uu.net). Ping the different DNS servers and find the one that gives you the lowest ping. If your IP is in my subnet, then 198.6.100.6 should work for you too!! No more pauses when resolving!! I am going to sleep...

From my end, cache08 also looked better than anybody.
I was using 04 and 03 and had no apparent problem, but
for the sake of anybody who are somehow suffering from
them, I switched to 08 to make them less crowded.

I use my local ILEC's (Verizon) DNS servers. They have always been rock solid for two plus years.

Or you can use what familyguy mentioned. For me the DNS's Cyber gave me is not as good as using PacBell or Speakeasy DNS. I chose to use Speakeasy for now and pings are much lower and consistant. So look up for your local region and use what you think is best for you. PacBell got a few DNS for San Jose area.
