 | Do not switch to Megapath!!! Do not switch to megapath Net!!! Never! Big screw up! Big time!!!
I agreed on terms with them, to have a speed of 1.5 mbps/256 kbps for monthly price of $65.95, with free installation fee and free router as I signed two years contract. Unfortunately I never got the speed as was promised, and instead got 768 kbps, which since activation day is not higher than 540/130!!! The are promising one thing, and when people sign for it, they are giving something else, far away from expected.
Megapath suck! |

Not for me...I have had ping from 15-80 ms for the past three years....most of the problems over the years were cause by Pacific Bell. |

You should read the SLA more closely. Like nearly ALL residential (ie under $100) ADSL service, the service is "best effort" with only 128k guaranteed.
If you want guaranteed speeds, get SDSL or business class ADSL and be prepared to pay for it.
My two cents. |

I hope not. I stressed to the customer rep when I called that was the sole porpouse of this line. he assured me several times that I would be pleasently suprised by my ping times. Im getting a IDSL line, hopefully by the end of the week. SBC terminated the line yesterday at the residence. im mean the only reason I would ever pay over 100 a month for a connection is for its low latency. Gawd, I hope I dont get screwed on this deal by megapath. So far they have been very impressive as far as their professional approach to the connection. |

 | reply to TonaSpalato Once in a while the routing gets really messed up and I get 90ms latency to servers in the same city. Otherwise it's pretty good.
And yes, residential ADSL is "best effort." Nothing is guaranteed. You need a business-level service for that. -- You cannot teach a man anything; You can only help him find it within himself. -Galileo |

mgrt67 join:2002-03-04 Oak Lawn, IL | reply to DkJackson Sorry to say this, but you should have chosen Speakeasy if gaming and pings were your main concern. I think Megapath is more business customer oriented. Sure they will get you an awesome gateway ping, but there routing around the country isnt so great. I've had both isp's and Speakeasy ownz Megapath for gaming. |

Even business class ADSL is "best effort", I signed up with business class ADSL and had to be ran in safe mode. I switched to 384 SDSL and haven't looked back. East coast ping times are less than 90ms and west coast ping times are less than 20 ms, and these are ping times running a heavily utilized web server and a SETI work unit distribution server.

ronsega join:2000-01-03 Chula Vista, CA | Isn't the west coast ping host one that is in Megapaths network? But thost are pretty good pings to that server.
My situation started out with SDSL 192kbps with Megapath. Things were good with that as far as ping to servers but download bandwidth was not so great. Decided to go with their ADSL offering since it became available in my area. At the time I did not have the option to increase my bandwidth due to financial hardships since being laid off. Anyhow, PacBell being the ILEC, having to get a line share from Pacbell turned out to be nothing but horrible ADSL service in the end. Initially the ADSL line was great. Was able to sync at fastpath. Pinging 7ms-19ms to my gateway. but was desyncing every evening, solved that issue with by disabling the LAMEST feature found in the Zyxel 643 DSL Router called "rateadaptive" (which resyncs the router if the Noise Ratio has fallen 3 db from the default 8 db it tries to maintain). And then every morning my dsl kicks me off, so they put me safe mode. finally it was discovered that on the DSLAM it was kicking me off because not enough virtual ports was configured. Once that was solved I tried getting out of safe mode but seems like I can not sync anymore out of safemode, looking at my Noise Margin downstream, its currently at 3.5 db. Given that the reading is low, I haven't had any problems with syncing.
So here I am stuck in Safe Mode which isn't the best fix. Now I'm pinging anywhere from 29ms to 39ms to my gateway. Also it doesn't help when the majority of the traceroutes to server end up going from the LA PoP up to northern CA then back down to Southern CA for servers IN Southern CA. It's hard to find any game servers below 50ms ping. I'll maybe get ONE server that pings 46ms, but the rest are already above 60ms going to 70ms and beyond. To someone, 60-70ms may be good, but my standards at 20ms-40ms.
Well now that I have a Job again, I'm going to splurge on a 1.1 mbps SDSL connection with Speakeasy this time around. See how it goes with them and hoping it turns out great. But so far, the local telco and covad had some mix ups that delayed the delivery of my Loop.

 | reply to TonaSpalato You are right, do not switch to megapath!!!!
If you thinking about MEGAPATH T1 line think twice, they are the worst provider of T1 service. Spent little more and go with normal business T1 providers! |
