proof

write the reporter from the LA Times... the editor felt confident enough from his sources to put it on the front page.if you're impassioned about it you can email Verizons legal department and they can sue the LA Times. that will really draw attention to it...

It's not my job to validate some hack's work from the LA Times. I would rather see Deputy General Counsel John Thorne's comments in context.

It sounds to me like you would rather put in a penny and get a dime back.

Don't get me wrong - I agree with almost everything you've said in this thread thus far about the RIAA being ridiculous. It is obvious you're concerned about the issue and want it to change.

However, finding ways to circumvent the RIAA's efforts isn't going to change anything for the better. If you want things to change, and judging from your posts I think you do, you need to put some effort into the cause. If we would all do that, instead of whining about the law while we break it, perhaps this issue could move beyond 2 different sets of thieves constantly duking it out.

Unfortunately, that's not going to happen. You and I will keep on stealing and blaming it on stupid recording industry standards, and the RIAA will keep on stealing and blaming it on p2p. And both sides will keep whining and whining and whining.

I do my part by supporting custom CD sites like (yeah I'm fruity) Dawsonscreekcds.com where Sony Pictures Television has opened their catalog of music featured on the show to custom ordering. For $12 you get 14 songs of your choice, labeling...a good deal if you like that type of music. But I'll be damned to pay $18 for 1 decent song because the RIAA can protect themselves while violating Federal law. I will continue to vigorously oppose organizations who manipulate the law to their advantage. And every time the RIAA whines...I will whine in return.

IOW, if we all stopped file sharing today...the price of CD's wouldn't drop a single penny and it would free the RIAA to continue their illegal activity unopposed.

By continuing the defiance of the RIAA's tactics, eventually the market will change to one more suited to the modern age. If we sit back and take it...evolution of the record industry will grind to a halt and knowing the RIAA, existing rights will continue to be eroded by politicos on the RIAA payroll.

Just curious, but you didn't have relatives that lived in Boston around December of 1773, did ya?

And...if we all started to get away from P2P applications that show our IP and associated files like a flashing light that says "Come Kick Me", we might just get around the RIAA the best way...which is to outmaneuver them on the electronic battleground. Check out this P2P scheme that doesn't link your IP to anything...

Yeah the whole thing stems from the RIAA going after the large offenders...the Verizon customer was trading 600 files...if there was no browse feature, he would have been just 1 of the zillion online that day so after all of their work...they would have only had someone with 1 song on their box...or none with such advanced warning.

As for Freenet, because they run the proxy, they'd be shut down by the RIAA sharks.

I couldn't agree more; however, 2 wrongs do not make a right. So, your support of custom CD sites is good -- but illegal downloading is bad, regardless of the excuses you make for it. I'm not saying you're a bad person, just that downloading the music is illegal even if you're trying to "stick it" to the music companies.

There are plenty of ways to make changes in the world, but very few of them involve actually doing the right thing. Stealing from the record company (and, thus, unfortunately from the artist) will indeed drain their resources, however, it won't elicit any sort of positive response.

Illegal P2P gives the record companies an excuse for the poor performance of their crappy, outdated ideas. Because of this excuse, less $ and energy is put into developing good ideas and more $ and energy is put into fighting illegal P2P.

If P2P didn't exist in the US, who would they blame? Philippine bootleggers?

All in all, P2P is both the problem and the solution for this issue.

2 wrongs may not make it right, but it makes it even. If they want to break the rules, then they have no bitch if I do.

Yeah - it's really even. You get free songs. They get billions of dollars.
