| Well, I tried it. Guess I can't recommend it, for now. Thankfully, Internet service seems unaffected. But I've lost the ability to access the cable modem via that lovely web interface at »3comcablemodem and / or »192.168.100.1
Also, have begun the "dialog" with 3Com. Their first response: "doing so may damage the modem and invalidates the modem warranty"!!!
Hello "me",
Thank you for connecting with the Online Support Center of 3Com. Unless you are a Cable Internet Service Provider, updating the firmware yourself is a violation of DOCSIS compliancy standards, which state only the hardware manufacturer and the ISP may update cable modem firmware. In addition, doing so may damage the modem and invalidates the modem warranty.
You should be able to reach the web page by visiting 192.168.100.1. However, if you are unable to reach the page, then it is because the modem was damaged by the update.
"me", we trust this response satisfies your product concerns. If not, please reply to this message indicating what more we can do to assist you in this matter.

Web Support Request from "me" "me"@userdomain.tld: ============================================== Name: "me" Email: "me"@userdomain.tld Address1: 1 Main St Address2: City: Somewhere State: MA Zip: 00000
Product Type: Cable_Modem Product Code: 3CR29220 Serial Number: my_serial_number
Operating System: XP OS Version: Professional
Problem Description: I upgraded the 3Com cable modem from its original 1.17 to 1.22.
»csoweb4.3com.com/cable/mso/tailfin/msocode »csoweb4.3com.com/cable/mso/tailf···_22a.bin
The upgrade seemed to proceed and complete normally. I have since powered off both the modem and the computer. The cable modem is still connected with the SMC Barricade router (SMC7004BR).
Access to the Internet seems completely normal after the upgrade.
However, previously, under 1.17, »3comcablemodem accessed the cable modem's web style interface.
Unfortunately, »3comcablemodem now gets: HTTP 404 Not found
Does the new firmware have a different name designation? Why doesn't the access work, as before?
What should I do to re-gain the web style interface? [text was edited by author 2003-02-22 17:08:00]
