I spoke with some reps about these extra ports. They have no installed electronics and are only there to make the box "ready" for these functions when they are available.
Everest Connections also has the 8000. From what I've heard, you can't get the local channels through it because it will crash the box. I think it's a firmware issue. Other than that, I haven't heard of any other problems from customers.
