 | Trying DSLi... gotta be better than Telocity? Well, I made a scary decision and signed up with DSLi... they seem to have mixed reviews, but there's no monthly contract and they don't need to make any changes to my existing hardware. Frankly, the first 3 times that installers and techs were out was enough. I don't want any more Goobers in my living room, thank you. |

 | Thought you were with DSLi, but you are using a Phoenix IP address? |
|
 | Yeah, I signed up but they won't be back to me until sometime between tomorrow and Friday with confirmation of the switch. One guy told me Friday in the first conversation when he took the order, and then when I called back to check on a few details the next guy said it might be within 48 hours that they achieve the switch. Of course, the phone was answered with a brusque "HELLO?" twice, and then I was dumped into a dial tone, before I managed the trick of getting someone the second time around. I'm not entirely sure that the roough edges are off DSLi yet, but it's gotta be better than enslavement to Teloshitty, which seems to be despicable. |

They set up my e-mail accounts just yesterday (Mar 18) and I still have a problem with their SMTP server (it doesn't get the outgoing mail addressed anywhere beyond dsli.com). So be patient for a couple of weeks. You are going to have some fun with these guys.

Are either of you with Rhythms? When I spoke with them. They at first said they could do an ISP switch. Then the next day said that Rhythms did not want to do a switch, but would have a new line provisioned. Just wondering. -- Regards from the Southland Wolf |

| reply to amoiseyev I called on the 8th, they (DSLi) said it'll take 24-48 hours, nothing happened yet. I'm going to call them in the next few days if nothing happens. I was away for a week after arranging the switch, figured I'd be switched when I get back but no such luck.. [text was edited by author 2001-03-19 18:43:24] |

 | reply to Wolf7 No, I'm with NP, which is why they supposedly can do it so easily. I called a local ISP that partners with Covad and essentially had the door slammed in my face. |

 | reply to Chipinphilly I also signed up for an ISP switch with DSLi about two and a half weeks ago. Nothing has happened yet. I inquired about the status last week, and the supposed ISP switch tech asked if I received a call from Northpoint about inside wiring. Duh - how many times do I have to explain I want an ISP switch. He said he'd then look into it with northpoint, but I never heard back from him. I called back yesterday, and no one else was able to get any info either. The guy I originally talked to apparently was the dedicated isp switch guy, and was out sick. My worry is that Northpoint is going to kill my line with Phoenix before the switch is done, and I will need to have a new line provisioned.

That is the same worry that I have with Rhythms. But DSLi Did set up a user name and password, so that I can check my order on the status page. At the moment it shows that a new line has been ordered. And gives a projected completion date. -- Regards from the Southland Wolf |

Wolf,
As to me, status of my order changed from "approved" to "WIP" on the day before my line was switched and it has been "WIP" till now. "Projected delivery date" was set to 04/10 when they change the status to WIP, and it is still the same, although actual switch was done about 03/15.
So, it doesn't look like this status-tracking-system reflects the real things. I was told by salesman, for example, that for ISP switch projected delivery date doesn't mean anything - system set it by default "one month later" and nobody care to set something real.
I have tried to send e-mails to my salesperson and to customer care trying to find out my projected switching date. I didn't get any respond beyond "be patient - you will be switched soon", but may be the number of calls and e-mails could affect how fast did they handle my request. (Just a guess). I was switched in 10 days - it is faster than average time which I see in this thread.

 | reply to Chipinphilly Okay, now I'm scared. My Phoenix email is out again, and web pages are loading slower than molasses in January. I wonder if switches are being thrown even as I speak?
On the DSLi front: my first call yesterday was handled by a very take-charge-sounding guy named Andre who promised me an email to confirm my ISP switch order and who seemed to know a little more about technical issues than the average bear.
Afterwards I went and called twice to find out some additional information, and got some cave-man sounding guy both times who answered the phone by going "HUH?", and then who transferred me into a dial tone each time when I asked for the extension that Andre gave me.
Today I spoke with Richard, who didn't seem to understand why I wanted him to send me a confirmation email to both the Phoenix account and to a Hotmail account:
"Hotmail? Why to Hotmail? I only have one space here for an email contact on the form."
Richard didn't understand that Phoenix is gasping its last and didn't sound as if he cared one iota for its demise or my imminent isolation. In the background it sounded like a sweat shop, without the hum of sewing machines.
This is nuts... |

Use yahoo or hotmail or whatever as a mail server for a while and put Megapath's DNS server as primary.
ns1.megapath.net 216.200.176.4 ns2.megapath.net 216.34.237.2 ns3.megapath.net 64.7.11.2
It will help with speed when Phoenixs's DNS servers are down. At least until you are connected to gateway.

 | Thanks for the advice... things are much faster now. Still no response from DSLi, though. I'm beginning to think that they're just like everyone else: greedy, undermanned and completely inept. |
|
 | The ISP switch takes time because Northpoint is in no rush to do them. I did get a few notes from DSLi while waiting for my switch, to the effect that they'd contacted NP and told them to get off their duff (well, not in so many words) |

| Rusotto,
I agree that DSLi depends on NP in this matter (mean time for ISP switch). But, it is no reason to ignore e-mail requests at all, right?
Another example: I've a problem with DSLI's SMTP server (it doesn't accept recipients with address outside dsli.com). Because they just set up my accounts I'm sure they misconfigured something. I've sent 3 requests since Monday morning and got first respond today. I will not post it here, but you can believe me that the service man didn't even read my question carefully.
So, I agree with the opinion that beside sale itself DSLi doesn't look much better then the others.

 | reply to Chipinphilly I managed to get an email to Elias at DSLi last night, indicating that I had been in touch with the company at least twice in two days and documenting names of contacts. He responded and indicated that he would try to punt it forward by ccing Richard and Andre on my email.
I read on the main page that today is the day that this whole NorthPoint thing hits the final fan... do you think maybe NP isn't eager to do anything until they figure out how it is that they're going to operate from here on out? I can't imagine that the federal government could let DSL access die on the vine for so many NP-provisioned users, could you? |

 | reply to Chipinphilly Oh - this is just too good. My ISP switch to DSLi finally was completed yesterday, and now it appears AT&T will be buying northpoint's assets and dumping all the customers! This is just great. I suppose I'll still be charged $100 by DSLi for the ISP switch despite only having perhaps a few days left of service.
