 | A bit of BritSys confusion... I am currently living in the Winston-Salem area of North Carolina, and I have been using Bellsouth 1.5/256 aDSL for about 4 and a half years. I have, obviously, liked the service thus far, and have never had any problems. Speeds have been VERY constant, and I get good pings to gaming servers. However, just the other day I stumbled upon BritSys, the new light in my eyes. I was attracted to their 1.5/768 for $45 a month package, since I am paying $55 NOW for a 256 upstream. I went to britsys' prequalification script (»prequal.britsys.com/prequal/prequal.jsp) and I ran the test. Unfortunetly, I am not able to get Worldcom dsl, according to that. According to this (»Company entry - Dedicated Network Solutions LLC) worldcom is the only one providing my desired package.
Here's my confusion part... what exactly is BritSys doing? If I am buying the DSL from worldcom, why am I doing this through BritSys? Do all small-scale ISPs buy their DSL service from larger corporations, then sell it to consumers? Also, is there any possibility that Worldcom IS available where I live, and I'd be able to get my 768?
Don't get me wrong, like I said earlier, I love my current connection. It has been more reliable than anything I have ever owned. And I am very involved with gaming (on a competitive level) so pings are important to me, that's the only reason I would even consider changing service. Thanks for any help you guys can offer. | | Reviews:

| Generally with britsys, they'll try the 1.5/768, and if you cant get that, theyll go to 768/384, at least that was their habit when I signed up. There are 2 types of Wcom resellers, some connect you to a wcom site locally, some shuttle you off to a pop that is regional. In my case, Britsys has a local site right here in town. Here's an indication of california performance.

You can't buy DSL directly from Covad or Worldcom, I don't think, though Covad, I know, runs one of the major networks. Another major DSL backbone co. went out of business a few years ago: Northpoint? Anyway, the game all along has been a dance between the retailler (your ISP), the backbone provider, and your local telephone co, all of which have to get to the same page eventually. Which is why it used to take weeks (sometimes months) to get a connection up (I haven't done it lately, don't know if it's improved). | |
