 | WOW THIS IS INTERESTING!!!! If this is true, both cable and the bells will need to be regulated or not regulated............Maybe I will be able to choose my cable company now if the FCC regulates cable.........Now that Cable is offering Telecommunications over their networks..........
The Day is coming that we as the consumer will have all our services regulated and I can get my choice and my price ..................................

True in theory. But if you did get non-Bell DSL service, you'll run into those "line problems" that can't seemed to get solved until you switch to the Bell DSL service. -- "Show me a thoroughly satisfied man, and I will show you a failure." -Thomas A. | yes they could force you, but there will be laws, as broadband is more widespread then ever, rules will be set it, and most in benefit for the customer |

Re: WOW THIS IS INTERESTING!!!! hahaha NO.
Not if any of the Big Companies have a say in this republican economy. SBC, Verizon, ATT.. These are all HUGE companies that have deep pockets. Pockets that politicians are (or are willing to be) in. [text was edited by author 2003-02-26 11:12:22] |

Re: Those of us with DSL are screwed Maybe I am slightly more jaded than you, but laws require influence with Congress and rules require influence with the appropriate Executive entity (i.e. the FCC). Who has more influence: the combined might of Verizon, SBC, BellSouth, and Qwest or Vonage? |

Re: Those of us with DSL are screwed I see your point!
what could happen is people will have a choice between vonage and Bells but vonage customers will pay a surcharge to be fed back to the government or to the bells so the pricing will equal out! I think vonage will start having to pay some extra charges if they want to continue. I see on this....they call it another napster and we know what happened to them.

And why would the FCC make an about face on cable regulation when they recently branded Cable Broadband as an "information service" which lifted any type of line sharing. There is no way in hell they would make such an about face. The regulation that the teleco industry has is borne out of the government subsidized monopolies the Bells had.
Vonage isnt a Bell... |

Re: WOW THIS IS INTERESTING!!!! "The Day is coming that we as the consumer will have all our services regulated and I can get my choice and my price .................................."
Regulated Choice? Buhahaha! Gov't Regulation is simply the Pigs doing the Dogs' dirty work. A compleatly free market is not the best situation for the consumer, but companies will always find a way to make even more money with regulation - and regulation stiffles competitiveness because big buisness has the capitol to push thru the regulation. Look at SBC buying the baby bells. I fear the day might come that getting broadband will be like going to the DMV. In a market economy incentive drives everything - the government's only incentive is to stay in power. A company like Verizon's only incentive is to make more money, which means selling more product, which means having a product that sells. Who do you think wants to serve you more, an employee at the DMV or a Technical Support person. Well, if you answered an employee at the DMV it is only because of economic circumstances - in a few years, if conditions improve, you will gladly call 1-800-Earthlink over visiting your local DMV.
Anyway - I don't know where I'm going with this, but my point is that high regulation is just as bad as a completely free market. |
