And you don't need dialtone to get DSL...you could pay a couple of extra bucks and get SDSL...the VoIP savings more than pays for it. -- When yer a pioneer, you're bound to get a few arrows in the butt.

All caps aside, I use it for a primary line. I haven't had any reliability problems and I've had it almost 5 months. It's as reliable as your broadband provider, so your performance may vary. Vonage seems to be marketing their service as a primary line service since they're pushing the fact that you can keep your current phone number is most markets. -- When yer a pioneer, you're bound to get a few arrows in the butt.

| Re: IS VONAGE A CLEC NOW TO CABLE? WILL CABLE Remember the main requirements for the Cisco box...for highest call quality they want 90kbps during the time your making or receiving a call. You would also need decent latency (below 150ms is best). Vonage is in NJ so even a half-assed provider would work for you.
I have both cable and a WISP and it works great with both. Call quality for me is better than Verizon because we have such crap line quality here. With DU I would get a best of 26,400 and the lines were full of noise and crosstalk. I personally don't have any voice quality issues with the Cisco setup and people I talk to can't tell it's VoIP...just a noise-free line.
Setup of the Cisco box is pretty brainless. It's plug and play. Hooking it up for all house wiring is a little more complicated but not very difficult...just requires disconnecting the house telco wiring from the CO (done at the test box). For a simple install most people just use an expandable cordless phone system. I just disconnected the wires at the box and plugged the Cisco box into a phone jack. So all jacks on that line are live for VoIP. -- When yer a pioneer, you're bound to get a few arrows in the butt. [text was edited by author 2003-02-26 10:41:26]
