I can get a signal from about 1/8 mile away or more. You need to have a good security system if you use this strong of a signal.

Where did you pick up the antennas? |

 | reply to dvandervelde Search in this forum and the Linksys forum and you will find very mixed reviews of the WSB24. Some (like the rather naive SOCALWUG reviewer linked above) gush about big improvements; others report no discernible change.
This is due to the wide variation in the performance of various users' routers/access points before adding the amp -- which in turn is due to Linksys' poor quality control.
The WSB24 will take an input signal between 5 dBm and 20 dBm and output a fixed 20 dBm. So those whose original units were performing like dogs to begin with realize a big boost. Those who had decent performance already get no significant improvement.
There is some boost to the received signal either way. IMHO, this could justify the purchase of the unit because the receive-sensitivity of the underlying Linksys units is so poor. But I didn't think it was worth the money. YMMV.
Another factor if you are considering also adding a third-party antenna: The WSB24 splits the signal into one antenna for transmit and another for receive, so you would need two matching antennas.
BTW, before buying any third-party antennas or the amp, you should try these and see if they meet your needs:

I get the impression from Mr. Erskine's site that one can take 2 old CD Rom's (say, from an AOL Promotion) and mount them 1 and 5/8" centered behind the WAP 11 dipoles and get a good-sized dBm result.
Do you know if anyone has tried this, and are happy with the results?
Best. |

 | reply to dvandervelde I was considering getting one so that I can get better reception across the street at the coffee shop where all the cute girls are!
Nice to discover the 3rd party antennas as well.

 | reply to GodsFO from what I heard, one antenna is send, one antenna is receive, rather then use a bi-directional amp (expensive), linksys uses two directional amps, one for receiving and one for sending.
i'm probably wrong though ... google would be your best bet for imperical data. -- And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposedif all records told the same talethen the lie passed into history and became truth. 'Who controls the past' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past. |

The WSB24 uses one antenna for RX and one for TX, according Linksys and the FCC.

If you happen to have a DWL-650+ also Dlink has a new beta driver that boosts your card signal by 4db, and it adds more features, happy with the total setup, awesome distance. |

That's a bummer, so instead of using one external antenna to extend your range, you would have to use two (one transmit, one receive). And depending on the amount of gain on your antenna(s) you may be breaking FCC regulations by doing so. -- "If it doesn't kill you, you'll learn from it. If it does kill you I'LL learn from it." |
