| see you 'round Well, it's doubtful you've missed the news that AT&T is yanking all the customers out of the Northpoint pool and is telling them to go away. This means that within the next week, it won't matter that I was never transferred to Telocity, that I'm still with PhoenixDSL. I'm hoping that Northpoint's collapse means that Telocity will just give up on me and not try to bill me for nonexistent service.
I've already signed up for 1.5/384K RADSL service through SpeakEasy.net (their Sysadmin/radsl/usr/pro package) and have a Covad order number. They are giving me a 30h/mnth dialup service for use even while I'm waiting for their service to be installed. This is a line-shared and self-installed package, so I hope I won't be waiting more than a week or two to be back up and running.
Those of you with Rhythms, best of luck being transferred to Telocity.
To Amy and whoever else is still at fortress PhoenixDSL, you guys rock. I hope you continue working in this industry, because we need more people like you.
To Northpoint -- you rocked. 'Nuff said.
To AT&T -- (I can't utter this publicly; this is a public forum which could be read by children, after all.)
Farewell, adieu, and allthebest. -Chris -- =C=

Anon | reply to Frostbite Good luck with the switchover... I have my PON number from DSLi but it doesn't look like they're going to honor it at this point, even for a Covad switchover. I get nothing but silence from them when it comes time to call me back and let me know what's going on.
I'm probably going to go with some form of Covad service at this point. It's rather obvious that Northpoint is deader than a skunk in the middle of the road, and even if AT&T were adroit and smart enough to scoop us all up and work with us, I don't like their smell any better than that of the skunk. |

Telredor join:2000-07-04 Beverly Hills, CA | According to what DSLi told me, they're trying to switch all their Northpoint customers to Rhythms or Covad. If one of those is in your area, there's a good chance you'll be ok. -- Resistance, is futile. |

See »For AT&T, NorthPoint Presents Many Opportunities also several other links on the main page. Basically, AT&T has bought all of Northpoints hard assets. But not the subscriber base. With a very good possibility of the Northpoint network being shut down within days.

| reply to Frostbite I've been hoping against hope that I could possibly get SpeakEasy.net up and running before Northpoint went dark, but that seems a bit hopeless at this point.
a) According to the order confirmation eMail I got from SpeakEasy, I should have access to TAC (Total Account Control) and the 56k dialup (30h/mth) now, but neither works.
b) Call their support line (choose from an option other than tech-support), and get dropped after ten minutes. At least they explained that they had an "unacceptable" call hold time before the system dropped me. I figure I'm not the only one switching from some Northpoint provider to SpeakEasy.
c) I imagine even as a line-shared installation, it'll take time for Covad to do its voodoo, and with probably a third of the Northpoint customers perhaps considering switching to a Covad provider (made-up figure), I'm sure they'll be overloaded and sluggish for the near future.
I sent an eMail to their pre-install order status folks, asking why my TAC/DialUp account wasn't yet active when the eMail seemed to imply it would be immediately active, but even their usual, w/in 24 hr, response time hasn't yet given me an answer.
Oh, well, I've got plenty of paper-based novels yet unread, and I'll still have the ability to download ebooks to my Palm IIIx (pre-ordered an m505, but I hope to be back on DSL before Palm even ships it!) from work, and I've got enough AAA batteries to power the handheld for a few ... years ... months!, so I won't be bored.

| reply to Frostbite Well, I spoke with someone at SpeakEasy yesterday and got access to my account status, eMail, and unlimited dialup service. That's all squared away, so I guess I'm ready to weather any break in DSL service.
Now, if that happens, I wonder if Telocity will still try to solicit me on their lousy, repackaged Verizon service (640/90). No, thank you. Since there's no contract, and with all the chaos, I'm hoping that at least Telocity will drop me without much argument, because I'm already in the process of installing w/ Covad.
Oh, well. Maybe we'll luck out, after all.

DescentWrap It UpPremium join:2000-11-10 Hoboken, NJ | bye and good luck, our transfer to telocity seemed to go ok... been out of town for 2 weeks and came back to a dead line... 1 hour on hold for a tech only gave us a trouble ticket... when I explained about the need for a line to do taxes and download forms they upgraded the trouble ticket to critical and we had service before 2 hours... hmm, that's impressive!
good luck all, come back here to let us know what happens. |

Telredor join:2000-07-04 Beverly Hills, CA | reply to Wolf7 Well.. I'm leaving as well. Unfortunately I have no Rhythms or Covad at my CO, so I'm off to cable. Got the modem already, just have to run the cable to my computer.
It's been fun while it lasted.. Good luck to all of you people. -- Resistance, is futile. |
