| Lies and lawyers are cheaper than network upgrades Municipal owned and coop owned utilities are a fact of life across the nation, providing electric, water, sewer and gas, even telephone and catv services reliably for many years. Many are building out fiber and broadband, some are doing very innovative work with Fiber To The Home, which the telco's and cable's aren't willing to finance. Note that nearly all of these local utilities initially came into being originally because a private utility did not want to do the job, i.e. spend the money to provide service to an area that was under-served.
The present situation still comes down to the would-be monopoly providers using lie and lawyers to stifle competition in any form while they continue to defer network upgrades and quality service...and limit competition so that their services are the only two choices available to end users.
FWIW: I've seen ILEC's and cable co's use similar PR and misinformation tactics against authorizing low-profile tower site rezoning for Wireless Internet Service Providers by city councils, e.g "This wireless service would require each residential user to construct a 60' tower in their back yard." Cable co's have also attempted to persuade local governments to forbid all satellite dishes, even though the FCC specifically prohibits this, in the same manner. -- Macy Hallock APK Net, Inc.
